There is an unprecedented amount of Type 2 Diabetes today. More specifically, 1 in 5 American children are considered obese. We are also starting to see hypertension in young children. Of the 40% of people today who are obese, half of them are taking some form of prescription drug. Heart disease and cancer combined kill 1 million people per year. 1 out of 3 people will develop diabetes in their lifetime. Due to these dietary issues, this generation of children might be the first to not outlive their parents (Wendel, 2011).

The Western diet is taking a toll on American’s health. The film argues that animal-based products actually heighten risk of disease. Therefore, animal-based foods like meat, dairy and eggs should be avoided. Instead, the film urges for a diet consisting of whole, minimally refined plants such as fruits, vegetables and legumes. Campbell went on to later volunteer and work in the Philippines, working to feed and nourish underprivileged children. It was there that he recognized higher accounts of liver cancer in children who were being fed a high animal-protein diet, and therefore discovered a relationship between degenerative diseases and animal-based products. Campbell continued to form extensive studies regarding this relationship. specifically focusing on diet and cancer (Wendel, 2011). “His legacy, the China Project, is one of the most comprehensive studies of health and nutrition ever conducted. The New York Times has recognized the study as the ‘Grand Prix of epidemiology’ ” (“T. Colin”, n.d.). Therefore, I believe Dr. Campbell to be an incredibly knowledgable, reliable source from the film based on his education and hands-on research and observation.
