The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American unit of fighter pilots. They fought in WWII as the 332nd fighter group and the 447th bombardment group. They are known as one of the Air Forces’ most successful and decorated escort groups. Their achievements helped lead President Truman to end racial discrimination in the military in 1948. Benjamin Oliver Davis Jr., their founder, was the first black three star general and also graduated from West Point. He was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1993.
