There have been many turning pints in global history that have all had major effects on the course of history. Two major turning points in global history are the Fall of Rome and the Crusades. These turning points both had a lot of positive effects on the Roman Empire. Although these turning points were a hard time to get through they eventually brought some good outcomes. The Fall of Rome and the Crusades were two major turning points in history because they both created stability and improved daily life in the Roman Empire. The Fall of Rome was a major turning point in history. Rome fell because it was politically unstable, had too much land to control, had invaders, used a lot of money to build churches and not enough on the military, and no one payed taxes. Rome was so big at the time that no one man could look after all of that land and if they had multiple leaders it was impossible for them to communicate back to each other. Orthodox Christians wanted to gain back their holy land from the Muslims, so Pope Urban II held the crusades because the muslims acted inappropriately towards their holy land. World War II was one of the most important wars in history. It featured multiple countries at constant conflict with each other. There were several battles that occurred in this 12 year long war. An example of two of the battles would be the Battle of Britain in the European theater of war, and the Attack on Pearl Harbor in the Pacific theater of war. Turning points are by definition a time of decisive and often beneficial change. An example of this can be seen in the following line written by Langston Hughes, “I didn’t believe there was a Jesus anymore, since he didn’t come to help me” (130). That line comes from a story about Langston Hughes’s turning point with religion. The story spoke of when he needed salvation and how he expected to see a physical manifestation of Jesus. When he did not appear, he no longer believed in Jesus. While reading this story it was hard not to see the overlap into my own life. I too had a struggle with my religion that led to a major turning point in my life. Something I believe most people do, because we all have our ups and downs, but those shifts only happen after a cataclysmic event. For me, failing my Honors Algebra 2 class did that. After which of course, I was forced to open my eyes to behaviors that I needed to mend.
A main cause of the Crusades was the treatment of Christian pilgrims. They were robbed, beaten, and then sold. The main group of Turks, the Seljuk Turks, were threatening and growing in power. The Byzantine Emperor, Alexus I, began to become worried and sent out an urgent plea to Pope Urban II, in Rome. He requested for Christian knights to help him fight the Turks. Pope Urban II did agree to his appeal although Byzantine Emperors and Roman Popes were longtime rivals. He also did agree with Alexus I, in fearing that the Turks were expanding. Two of the most important events in European History are the unifications of Italy and Germany. Both were unified around the same time, and in ways that were both similar and different. The leaders of the two countries were the reason they were unified differently. Count Camillo Benso di Cavour, with the help of Guiseppe Garibaldi, brought about the unification of Italy. Otto von Bismarck is credited with finally uniting Germany. Cavour of Italy and Bismarck of Germany used more similar methods than different methods to unify their countries. These methods included different military tactics, their common use of nationalism as a manipulation tool, and their similar diplomacy in political situations.
