Summary #2 The development of narrative in film is a major turning point in cinema, as filmmakers and actors now had to focus on conveying a transformation the audience could not only relate to but a new, innovative idea that left the audience wanting to rewatch the film despite knowing the ending. This addition of narrative added a new layer and appeal to filmmaking, as now instead of the sole focus being shots and editing, of using the equiptment to it’s full potential, now there were lead actors that had to take the audience through a comprehensible journey. These films also had a new structure to follow, starting with exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and the resolution or reconciliation. A lot of times besides giving the audience a lack of clarity towards timelines and character motives, these twists to the narrative rules left open-ended conclusions; this allowed the audience themselves to decide what happened to the character, be it whether they were able to finally achieve their goal or if they fell short. One example of this in in the film Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), directed by Guillermo Del Toro the ending can imply two different scenarios: the first being Ofelia was the long lost princess that was finally able to return home after completing these tasks and suffering through abuse; the second is the belief Ofelia simply had a very active imagination, a coping mechanism often seen in victims of abuse, in order to escape the unpleasant conditions she faced at home, and instead of actually being the long lost princess, the ending scene was a hallucination created by Ofelia to cope with dying. Another popular method many filmmakers started falling into was the use of restricted narration, this focused on events in the film occurring naturally instead of having a voice over, or narrator, explain what is happening to
