The themes that are picked out in the novel are: Trust, Romance, Friendships and Death.
The novel opens with Miles’s going away party, which only his neighbors attended. With no true friends from his old school, Miles moves to Culver Creek. At first Miles is hesitant with his friendships but he slowly learns to be himself around his new friends. We learn that Miles values his new friendships by the way that he strictly adheres to the Colonel’s “no ratting” policy and shares both his time and money in order to smoke and drink alcohol, activities in which he had not previously engaged. When executing pranks on the Weekday Warriors, the Colonel impresses upon him the importance of not ratting each other out to the administration. He comes to fully trust the Colonel, but he still doesn’t trust Alaska even though he likes her. When it comes to light that Alaska is the student who ratted out her roommate the year before Miles arrived, the Colonel is deeply hurt and confused. Because he trusts the Colonel he is able to form a real friendship with him, but the trust he has for Alaska compels him to create imaginary version of his relationship with her.
Pudge discovers many different features of romance. He sees the Colonel’s wild relationship with Weekday Warrior girlfriend, he encounters Lara Buterskaya has a thing for him, and his growing relationship with Alaska. In the novel, no one is really in love, but Pudge thinks he is. When Alaska and Pudge kiss, their relationship becomes more complicated. Power makes her cruel and ruthless. The theme of power also appears in much understated, stronger ways in the novel. The struggle between the Dauntless initiates to reach the top of the rankings brings out the worst in many of them. Peter and his cronies tease and abuse Tris even though she is physically weaker than them. Peter stabs Edward in the eye in order to rise to the top. The tension over the rankings even drives gentle Al to violence and eventual suicide. The most powerful person is the one who has the most control over everyone else which most characters want. But Veronica Roth makes sure that readers know how dangerous power can be. As Mr. Prior warns Tris, a lust for power can lead men into dark and dangerous
