Leaders Teach Youth on the Football Field
The Truman State football team, containing a solid group of leaders, including 12 senior starters, and young talent, a freshman quarterback and two other underclassmen starters, relied on senior leadership.
To begin the season, 12 of the Bulldogs' starting 17 players were seniors. However, this team was comprised of 97 members, so there was a definite influence of youth. Therefore, Coach Ware depended on the leadership of his seniors to impact his team
"I believe in senior leadership," stated Coach Ware. "I have to rely on it. It is needed both on and off the field in order to improve the football team."
These seniors had experienced both the trials and victories of previous football seasons. Therefore, Coach Ware, along with the rest of his staff and team relied on these players to step up and take the leadership positions. His seniors proved their leadership both on and off the field through their words, efforts, and examples.
One of the most vital mentoring tasks for the season may have been the sophomore quarterback, Eric Howe. Howe only started one game during the 1998 season; so, beginning the 1999 season, he was fairly inexperienced as a starter on the college level. Even though he was inexperienced, Coach Ware was pleased with the improvements Howe had made.
"He had to learn a new offense, and the offense takes a while to learn," admitted Coach Ware. "Early in the season he struggled some with the offense, but I could see his potential as a quarterback."
Another factor that faced the Truman State football team was their tough non-conference schedule. Coach Ware believes in playing solid competition outside the conference in order to improve his football team. So, Truman headed to Illinois to play Illinois State. Illinois State (ISU) is a Division I-AA school and was ranked among the top three in the nation in football. The task of playing ISU was a tough one, but it hopefully made the Bulldogs stronger for their conference season.
Students should read this book in a high school English classroom because it demonstrates how relationships can be difficult, but teamwork can help to solve many issues. Hutch realized that it would not help his team to continue fighting with Darryl and by being mad at his father. He was able to take those difficult relationships and form them into positive outcomes and achieve his goal. After winning the championship game, “Hutch made his way through his teammates, and up through the stands and did something he had not done in a very long time: Hutch hugged his father. And his father hugged him back” (Lupica 243). This proves to students that if they continue to work hard and focus on a goal, they can achieve it by being a team player on and off the field.
Although the film did not examine in detail the knowledge coach Herman Boone possessed before he began his position with the Titans, it shows glimpses into his experience and wisdom. Boone clearly knew and loved football, as evidenced by his hours of dedication and labor. In the scene where he is first introduced to coach Yoast, he describes his past experience as a coach in North Carolina, and his previous winning seasons. Coach
Valvano gave a speech at the 1993 ESPY awards in which he depicted his ideas of leadership. He stated that leaders need a vision. He said that in one practice every year he would have the players practice on how they would act when they win. He did not say if they win, he said when they win. Valvano was giving his players a vision. They had something to believe in and play for. They were not playing just to look good and move on to the professional level. They were playing to win a national championship. Valvano envisioned an idea for his team and his team bought into that vision. He also taught that leaders need to connect with their followers. Valvano stated that he often would randomly call his players into his office just to chat with them. He wanted them to feel comfortable with him. They did not just talk about basketball, they could talk about anything. Valvano’s followers, in this case his players, were comfortable with him and they trusted him. They had no doubt when it came to their leader. Valvano fully understood the value of connection. He also taught that leaders learn from their followers. In Valvano’s final speech he talked about the four things that the 1983 national championship team taught him. They taught him hope, dreaming, persistence, and love. These four things came from the connection that Valvano had with his players. The 1983 national championship team
In the movie Kurt Warner is shown to be both a coach and a mentor. When Warner was with the cardinals he took Larry Fitzgerald under his wing and mentored him. During a game Fitzgerald wanted Warner to through him the ball one more time so he could get over a hundred yards for the game. Warner told him he would try, but Fitzgerald should be more worried about the well being of the team than him. This is a very mature thing to say to someone. Fitzgerald says after this meeting that he really gained more respect for Warner and then on after would go to him with problems. Warner assumes the more coaching role when he was at the Giants and came in relief for Eli Manning and turned the game around. After the game Warner said he never wanted the Giants to put him in relief again, because the team should be concerned with building up Manning as their franchise quarterback. Even though Warner was not technically a coach, this was a move a coach would do. Warner was more concerned with the big picture and the future of the franchise. Warner being both a coach and a mentor was very effective. He not only was working with entire teams and groups of people, but he took time to focus on the individuals and care for
Gene Stallings, who was one of Bryant's players at the time, said, "We left in two buses and came back in one, and that one was half full." Bryant put his team through hell at Junction because he wanted to build character and have his players realize that things were going to be done his way. They finished the season 1-9, Bear's only losing record as a head coach! The foundation had been placed and in 1956, the Aggies won the Southwest Conference championship. In 1957, halfback John David Crow received the Heisman Trophy, the only player coached by Bryant to receive the award. After a few years in 1958 Bear Bryant joined Alabama, but this time...he was head coach. Bear once said “What are you doing here? Tell me why you are here. If you are not here to win a national championship, you’re in the wrong place. You boys are special. I don’t want my players to be like other students. I want special people. You can learn a lot on the football field that isn’t taught in the home, the church, or the classroom. There are going to be days when you think you’ve got no more to give and then you’re going to give plenty more. You are going to have pride and class. You are going to be very special. You are going to win the national championship for Alabama.” Bear knew how to give moving pre game speeches. It makes you think abut how much he cared for his football player. Bear dedicated his life to football, but he
He was especially tough on Nick though. By their third season he had turned a group of rookies into a real football team. In their third season they went undefeated and unscored upon. After that season they went on 39 game win streak. This team would spark Nick Saban’s love for the game of football.
Throughout College Football's extensive 138 year history, there has been debate over which football team is the greatest dynasty. Many dynasties throughout the nation have the ability to be titled 'the greatest'. Nevertheless, the University of Notre Dame is undeniably the best overall College Football dynasty, when one considers not only statistics but also tradition, heart, and dedication. Notre Dame?s exceptional dynasty has many attributing factors throughout its history. These factors range from the greatest coaches and players to the contagious Irish spirit. No matter what ethnic background a Notre Dame man comes from, the minute he steps out onto 'Rockne's house'(Notre Dame Stadium), he automatically becomes one of the Fighting Irish. It is a telling act that throughout Notre Dame's history, and increasingly in recent years, many players, coaches, and fans have made the university their home purely because of their preference to be in the midst of a community of learning where belief is not merely tolerated, but in fact is celebrated.
The first day we got there we had started off so wrong by arguing. We weren’t doing well and we argued most of the time. Us as a team, we honestly made ourselves look bad in front of the coordinators and other teams that were watching us. The coaches had given us a real big pep talking about sticking together as a team to make us better. Although we didn’t think we needed it, it actually
The town and school have come together a lot since the beginning of the season. When Jeane Bertier, Gerry’s mom, enters the stadium, everyone stands up and cheers. The white and the black fans. They all start to chant Gerry’s name. Before the game starts Gerry’s girlfriend, Emma, comes down onto the field. Earlier when Gerry introduced her to Julius she would not shake his hand. She has come a long way with racism and now accepts Julius as Gerry’s best friend. She came down onto the field to shake Julius’s hand. The first half is ugly but the Titans are only down 7-0 at the end of two quarters. In the locker room at half time a lot is said. Coach Boone starts off saying, “It's all right. We're in a fight. You boys are doing all that you can do. Anybody can see that. Win or lose... We gonna walk out of this stadium tonight with our heads held high. Do your best. That's all anybody can ask for.” Julius tells him out of respect that doing our best is not enough. He tells Coach Boone that he has demanded perfection out of them. He goes on to say that no individual can be perfect, but by never losing a game this season, they can be perfect as a team. One of my favorite quotes of the movie is said by Coach Yoast after Julius spoke. It signifies just how important this team really was for the entire town including himself. He said, “I hope you boys have learned as much from me this year as I've learned from you. You've
Both on an off the field, my enthusiasm and motivation to obtain a goal is a trait that I am very proud of. I have faced many tasks where a leader had needed to step up and I am always willing to do so. I am also willing to get help when I need it. If I can’t complete a task by myself I do not mind asking a classmate, teammate, friend or a teacher for guidance. By bringing that openness and leadership to University of Charleston’s Athletic Training Program I believe that I can also attribute to the University of Charleston’s Mission Statement “to educate each student for a life of productive work, enlightened living, and community involvement.” By bettering the Athletic Training community by providing care to our Athletes I believe that I will be a great addition to the Athletic Training
“Leaders instill respect for authority by having a caring attitude, by being direct, by communicating regularly and by being honest!” (Mike Krzyzewski). The book “Leading with the Heart,” is one about leadership, how you earn it, how you practice it, and how you are to use it to make your organization a successful one. Coach K talks about the importance of trust, communication, pride, and the commitment the leader of an organization must have to make his team. He goes on to state that “leadership is ongoing, adjustable, flexible and dynamic. Leaders must stay on their toes, being that anything can occur during the year. Krzyzewski also mentions the competitive fire the leader must bring day in and day out to keep his players, and or staff in
Being on this team transformed me from a shy freshman to someone strong, both physically and on the inside. I learned that failure is how we learn to get back up after literally being pushed to the ground. That while making mistakes is inevitable, the challenge comes with learning from them.
Walter was a quick learner, he already in the first 5 practices had the starting position for the runnin...
I believe that leadership is an important skill to have, especially when teamwork is involved. Over the many years that I have played, I wanted the team to be really close. I thought that in order to be successful we must all treat each other like we wanted to be treated. The experience of being around the girls and coaches on my team made me feel like they were my second family. I would spend almost the same amount of time around them as I would my own family at home. I am extremely thankful that I have friends on the team and it is an honor for me to be one of their leaders.
Philip followed in his father’s footsteps, who was once a linebacker for Mississippi State in the 1970’s and moved on to be the head coach for Athen’s High School, where Philip attended. Philip would play his first official game in 1996 and not see a bench until he was a rookie in the NFL. It was then that his...
