Film Response 3 The film “Trobiand Cricket” discussed in-depth how the people of the Trobiand islands reinvented the game of cricket to make it their own. They were introduced to the game because of british colonialism, as the game originated in England in the 1800s. Christian ministries introduced cricket to the people of Papua New Guinea. The games were introduced to the Trobiand as a form of entertainment to replace their former tradition of obligatory warfare, or kayasa. The Trobians made many changes on all levels of the game. The game was no longer just a game, but competition become more heavily a rivalry between teams and the games became political. Someone might organize and pay for a game to occur to further a cause for themselves. They enlarged the team size, teams could have as many as 50+ people. They also added chants, that become just a big a part of the game as the actual gameplay. Along with chants, they wore war paints and the dances that go along with their chants come in a war-like formation. They changed both the bat, making it curved, and the ball. I don’t think cricket is very popular here, but there are many sports that are very popular to watch and play. Sports are a big part of American entertainment and culture. Toward the end of the video it is mentioned that no matter what, the home team wins, to show respect to the person who organized the game. This is so different than sports in the US, excluding youth sports, all sports from middle-school sports, college sports, to professional leagues, keep score. Winning is the main goal, and if you were predispositioned to win either way I feel it would take some of the fun away from it.
