In “Trifles”, the main theme is revenge. Readers are able to see revenge throughout the entire play. The play would not be the same without revenge. However, revenge is not the only theme, readers can also see many other themes during the play. Revenge was the reason why Mrs. Wright killed her husband. Revenge is important to the play because without revenge there would be no play. It is very easy to understand why Mrs. Wright was not happy with her marriage. It was known that her husband was constantly beating her. The abuse caused Mrs. Wright to feel many emotions such as, sadness, disbelief, and most importantly anger. This was one of the things that caused Mrs. Wright to want revenge on her husband. During the play, Mrs. Hale described Mrs. Wright as “lively” but she also said, “that was thirty years ago” (Champlin). This shows that she believes Mrs. Wright has changed a lot in the last thirty years, probably due to the poor treatment by her husband. …show more content…

Wright felt like she was in a cage because she was not allowed to leave the house and her husband did not want to have any children. Mrs. Wright bought a bird to help her get out of that cage and enjoy life. Mrs. Hale said that Mrs. Wright “used to sing pretty herself” (Champlin). This shows that Mrs. Wright probably was singing with her bird. The bird was the one thing that always brought happiness to Mrs. Wright. When it is known that Mr. Wright was the one who rung the birds neck it gave us more reason to believe Mrs. Wright wanted revenge on her husband for killing the one thing that always brought her
