There are many reasons why people commit crimes, whether it be petty crimes or murder level crimes. These are a couple of plays that revolve around a woman’s struggle to deal with the crime she committed and the resulting actions. Trifles and A Doll House are about wives and their desperate situations which resulted in a crime that is apparent throughout the story and their resulting consequences. In Trifles, John Wright is murdered in his home and his wife is the main suspect. The county attorney and the sheriff are searching the home for a motive to the crime. They invite their wives along to the crime scene. Mrs. Hale and the other wives “help” by removing the little things that may make Mrs. Wright look suspicious. “Because they identify with her and because they see her as an individual and not simply a participant in a criminal action, they uncover the key evidence in the case” (Holstein 286). The women, unlike the men, are putting themselves into Mrs. Wright’s position, and ultimately solve the case.
In A Doll House, Nora forges a signature to borrow money to save her husband’s life. She is left to lie to her family as she tries to hide her situation with Krogstad, the man she borrowed money from. Both wives are not innocent, there is a crime that has been committed. Mrs. Hale has tampered with a crime scene, Nora has a forgery scandal that could ruin her family’s reputation if it got out. In both situations, there is at least one person helping to hide the crime from others. In Trifles, the wives are uncovering evidence and hiding it before their husbands can spot something of use. In A Doll House, Mrs. Linde is helping Nora veil her lies from Torvald, although she later changes her mind and is crucial to the downfall of Nora’s
