Trees have been apart of our literature from the before the first written word. In the Garden of Eden there is the Tree of Knowledge and the Tree of Life. Many of the classic stories give trees subtle yet pivotal reminders for the readers in many of the stories.
In the Odyssey, Odysseus made his and Penelope’s marriage bed out of an olive tree that had grown in the middle of the room to represent their immovable marriage. He uses the olive tree because olive trees represents strength,fruitfulness and purity. When he returns from the Trojan war after twenty years Penelope is wary that he is actually Odysseus and states she will bring their marriage bed into the hall for him to sleep on causing Odysseus to go crazy and she realized that this man is her husband. They are tortured by devils who come and pick the leaves, berries and signs of life from the tree branches. Trees are symbolized in this story as a prison that is a constant reminder of life. Trees usually show rebirth and the progression of life, in the winter time trees struggle to live, shutting down non-essential growth and production to save itself. Whereas in summer the tree blooms to its potential just like a human life does. Those who commit suicide cut their life short in the midst of adversity, so in Hell their ‘lives’ are also not allowed to flourish past the hibernation of winter, they are not ever going to bloom as they never allowed themselves to bloom during life. The trees’ purpose in this story is very different from the Odyssey. Their purpose is to be a sturdy constant reminder of the life that the suicides cut short, instead of bringing peace like nature tends to do they bring pain externally by the demons and internally by the sturdy
