The trauma of “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is evident at the most cursory reading, but when trauma theory is applied to the short story the deep trauma is revealed. The narrator of the short story suffered from pathological dissociation brought on by the traumatic, lonely, unfulfilled existence she led in the room with the yellow wallpaper and in 19th-century society. The trauma of her life stems from her isolation, the absence of others from her life, and the standards she was meant to uphold as a woman of the century. Through her isolation and the destitute situation of the yellow-wallpapered room, the narrator removes herself from the woman who was locked in the room.
