President Barack Obama’s administration recently presented guidance on the policy for transgender bathrooms in schools across the nation. The administration said that a student who is transgender, should be able to use whichever restroom they prefer. A current federal judge, Judge Reed O’Conner has currently blocked the administrations guidelines so that school districts do not experience any controversy or problems during the start of the school year. Judge O’Conner says that the guidelines were created without much thought or understanding. People either believe that transgender students should use the restroom that corresponds with their birth gender or people believe that transgender students should be allowed to use whichever restroom they are more comfortable with. Those who agree that a person’s gender identity should follow their birth certificate say that basing a person’s identity off of their sex, is the best option for the nations laws. One person who was majorly against the administration’s decision was an Attorney General, Ken Paxton. Paxton argued that under state law to protect and create a reasonable learning environment for the students in each school. The states and school districts were also upset that federal funding was said to be removed if they failed to cooperate with the new plan. On the other hand, people who believed that transgender students should be allowed into restrooms based on their own decided gender identity also have ideas to express as a result of the block by Judge O’Conner. These people say that there should be no discrimination in schools ever, even when it comes to transgender students. Overall, this blockage may not change the policies for transgender students in school bathrooms, but it should remove the threat to cut out federal funding for schools in the United

Controversy has spread and gone around the world for so many years and especially recently. In order to answer whether transgender children be allowed to use the restroom they identify with I would first like to identify what transgender means. According to Merriam Webster’s dictionary “The Medical Definition of TRANSGENDER.: of, relating to, or being a person (as a transsexual or a transvestite) who identifies with or expresses a gender identity that differs from the one which corresponds to the person 's sex at birth.” I believe the knowing what transgender means is important because there are misconceptions about someone being transgender. I chose the topic of transgenderism. Transgender is when an individual tries to switch genders. Transgender comes from the Latin words trans, meaning “across.” Transgender literally means “across gender.” Many trans-individuals decided later on in their lives that they want to switch genders, and other people argue that they were born the wrong gender. Trans-people experience many difficulties throughout their lives. Switching genders makes their lives more challenging, because of many reasons. It is legal to for transgender individuals to use whichever bathroom they feel to be is more beneficial. Many schools and states are trying to appeal this law. When the South Dakota House of Representatives were faced with the option to veto this law they chose to keep the law in place (“South Dakota House”). New York has also reinforced transgender individual’s right to choosing a bathroom (“New York mayor”).

Some say one should use the restroom of his/her biological identity, while others say one should have the right to use the restroom they gender identify with. Florida’s, Texas’s and Kentucky’s new proposed bathroom laws have “caused fear and dismay among transgender people around the country” (Tannehill). Kentucky laws are more focused on the school systems but Florida 's and Texas’s laws treat transgenders as if they were criminals.
