Transformational Leadership is a style of leadership that has the ability to make change within an organization. This leadership style is new compared to some of the other leadership styles. This style not only changes the organization, it also can change the followers within the organization. Within Transformational leadership the leader identifies change that needs to be made and together the organization thinks of a plan that can execute the change. Support, motivation, and inspiration are key factors of this leadership style that the leader creates within the organization and amongst the followers. Adaptability is a key characteristic when applying Transformational Leadership. The leader has to be adaptable in order to engage in change. They have to be fluid and be comfortable with the change taken place. The ability of being inspiring is also a characteristic when applying Transformational Leadership. In order for followers to feel that you are aligned with their ideas and visions you have to inspire them that change is even needed. According to the HOW report (2016), “Inspiration is 27% more predictive of performance amongst employees than engagement.” Being a visionary is also important. You cannot change the future unless you can envision the change. During this phase, the leader is able to create the vision of the company and communicate it well enough to engage followers to believe in the new vision and direction of the organization. The last characteristic is being charismatic. Being charismatic is the ability to use your charm to engage others to follow you. If there is an organization that is stagnant, then a Transformational Leader will have the best approach in order to develop the new vision needed. The leader would lead by providing the followers with motivation, a sense of comradery and purpose, along with having them buy into the new vision. The leader would be able to identify with the follower’s ideas to build the positive relationship needed from the follower.
Transformational Leadership is most effective when organizations followers are open to change and feel that a change needs to be made within the organization. For example, the agency I currently work for is undergoing change. We are moving from a case management approach to a more holistic therapeutic approach. As a leader within the organization I feel that a client will need more than surface-based services. As a result, we are in the midst of making changes in order to reflect that. It is my job as a leader to allow the followers to buy in and believe in this new model.
Transformational Leadership is ineffective when an organization is very resistant to change or when change is not needed. For example, a school that feels that no changes need to be made to their policy regarding curriculum. It would be very hard for a Transformational Leader to come into the school and introduce LGBT inclusive
