Using traditional gender roles are a lot like barriers. They block you out from doing something or going somewhere that you really want to. Traditional gender roles have been used for centuries and is used to describe the stereotypes of what a man and woman should look like, wear, and act like. Adhering to traditional gender roles is harmful as it causes sexism, affects people and their live negatively, and adds to the negativity in the world.
Sexism in jobs and on tv shows have been caused due to traditional gender roles. This sexism was shown on the popular tv show “The Bachelor” and many girls acknowledged this. The negative effects it has on people's lives was shown in a study of the impact gender roles have on a person's self-esteem. The study found that “Young female adolescents with low levels of positive feminine attributes and high levels of negative feminine attributes were more likely to have low self-esteem”(Pryor). This quote shows the negative affect gender roles have on people by saying the more positive things people have in their lives about their gender, the higher their self-esteem. The traditional gender roles take away from positive gender attributes for women and as a result they have these body image issues, feel unworthy, and start to have self-esteem issues. Another negative effect on people's lives was also shown in a study on anxiety linked to gender roles and stereotypes. “According to the ADAA women are more likely to make less money than men, be sexually harassed, live in poverty, and raise a child while working a full-time job… these pressures undeniably contribute to stress in women”(Mckeand). This shows how gender roles negatively affect a person's life by explaining how these daily struggles caused by gender roles can give someone anxiety and all together hurt a person's life in the long run if it’s not handled. Gender roles make these struggles harder to handle and make anxiety and other problems
