Introduction Historical events evidently allow us to believe that as human beings the world encompassing us has refused to remain the same. Whether an individual exists in this universe as a student, professor or even as a social scientist it is inevitable that they exist in some form of a society. Societies may be governed as either traditional or modern with the exception that some are influenced by both. When comparing the two there are is an outstanding amount of differences that contrast the two societies like night and day. Traditional and modern societies have few similarities but countless distinctions. If you took an individual from modern society and placed them in a late 1900s traditional society it would be quite challenging 101). Prestige was known to be is very important in a traditional society as it was an indicator of high status within the community. Conlin states, "The family 's task is to always enhance their prestige, honor, and respect. (p.) Modern society is unlike traditional society, family itself is not always the most important aspect instead, individualism and freedom are emphasized as the central aspect. Freedom is essential and opposition towards forces which attempt to restrict individual freedom. Modern society values ambition and upward mobility, whereas in traditional society an individual was prescribed a role at birth and throughout their life. (Conlin, 2015). Modern society is also concerned with the latest fashion trends and technology. For example, people want newer versions of phones constantly or the latest style of purses. Competition is everywhere in this society, individuals want to have the best of everything, this allows the society to move forward and advance. Whereas in traditional society, there was a lot of stagnation and since their roles in society were limited, there wasn 't room for creativity or advancement. Social Hierarchies According to Bell (2015), "Significant proportion of the population the relation of social position to cultural style-working class, middle class, and upper class- no longer holds" (p. 38). Today in society, no individual of the higher working class can dictate where individuals stand in society. Whereas in traditional society, According to Bell (YEAR), “what was once considered luxurious for the middle and lower class is now just an ordinary item[s]” (p.156). Before the Industrial revolution individuals that weren’t from the higher classes, could not afford basic items that today, are very inexpensive to buy. The industrial revolution is when the mass consumption began. According to Bell (YEAR), “three social inventions: mass production on an assembly line, the development of marketing, and the spread of installment buying made … mass consumption possible” (p.156). Companies hired more workers which, created more production and made goods more affordable so more people could purchase them. Installment buying is when you could purchase a good and pay it off in portions. This idea changed the way traditional society looked at debt. Bell (YEAR) states, “the trick of installment selling was to avoid the word ‘debt’ and put a [greater] emphasize the word ‘credit '. Installments were commonly used for the poor, and it was considered as a sign of financial instability” (p.157). Though modern society is all about consuming the latest technology, now buying goods on installments is not considered financial unstable like it was in the 1900s. Have credit cards are a norm in society and have also sparked many business and banking opportunities. This shows the shift in individuals
In America, our society is categorized by the poor, working, middle, upper middle, or upper class. Majority of America today seems to be under the working to middle class. It's hard to tell what
Society in today’s world takes everything for granted. We do not thank anyone for what we have. It is just part of our daily life. All the legal rights we have are given. But we often forget about our history and the struggle people went through to get what we have today; Women as being seen as equals, having the right to vote and be in certain career fields that only men used to work in. Before democracy became a part of our societies, countries were ruled by kings and what the king said became law. Life was based on a hierarchy, and depending how much money or land you had determined how good of a person you were and who you were allowed to affiliate with. The higher you are on the hierarchy the closer you were watched by the community. Everything you did determined how people would see you. Especially during the 16th century when the protestant reformation and the peasant war dominated, peoples’ views changed which transformed laws and people themselves.
David has a strong thesis. It states that since the early 1800's our society has not changed
To best understand how culture has changed, one must take into account the way it once was and what circumstances helped to alter it. Traditionally, living in the United States had comprised of a much more community-oriented culture. (Kingdon) This was especially true in the days before the automobile (and the railroad to a small extent) when communities were more isolated from mass movement, migration, and displacement of its denizens. Before the Baby Boom and especially before the Industrial Revolution, the American landscape, even on the east coast, was comprised of primarily isolated village communities and distinct urban centers. Travel and economic factors (economies were more localized then) created an environment where it was quite easy and possible for an individual to grow up, live and work, marry, and die in their hometown community. Hence, since people were more lik...
Material and ideological conditions are integral components of a market society, which interacted and changed the ways we view market society today. I will discuss the shift from traditional societies to a market society to explain what Polanyi refers to as “the great transformation”. I will then talk about the changes that have occurred in the workplace, the impact on these workers, and the worldview of those in a market society.
“Proper society did not think about making money, only about spending it.”, said Barbara W. Tuchman. This quote shows our real world, and the people that spend money, but they forget about the value of money. Nowadays people want more that they have. They forget how many things they have, and how much money they spend. Most people when they see other people having something better, and in that moment they want to have it also. Also, people forget how hard they got that money, but how easily and quickly they spend it. In the article “The treadmill of consumption” by Roberts, he says that people are willing to go into debt to buy certain products and brands. That is right that people can do crazy things to buy certain goods.
Retention of Traditionalism: for this young generations is really hard to keep up with the traditions because society has put it in them that in order to be accepted In society they need to blend in they cannot be different, so is hard for the young generation to keep up with their traditionalist side but at the same time be able to do the things that the people in the society they are living do.
Society is ever changing and the people are just the same. Throughout history, it is shown that people change and mold to their surroundings. But when a deeper look is taken it is revealed that there is a minority that is unwilling or unable to fit these standards as most people do. These people tend to be forced into seclusion or made to fend for themselves. This is shown through the colonization of America and up into more recent times. The Native Americans are the first to make a life on this land, and when the English set up a new society, the Natives are forced onto smaller and smaller plots of land until forced to conform or to live on a reservation. The idea of this societal conformity is shown in “What You Pawn I Will Redeem” by Sherman Alexie, a short story author. Society's pressure to improve an individual living differently is hurting more than it is helping.
In modern society these 3 traditional social classifications, working, middle and upper class are outdated, fitting less than 40 percent of the United Kingdom's population. In April 2013 the British Broadcast Corporation introduced a new model for social classification, within the United Kingdom. Social class and socioeconomic groups traditionally have been defined by income, occupation and ed...
Social class has always been influential in America even though many people put forth that someone’s social class is insignificant when building friendships or any other relationship. But the reality is that those thoughts are mistaken because the truth is social class has become a larger concept than what it’s thought to be. Due to the class difference all the social classes have been drifting apart from each other and avoid interacting with each other (Bartlett 1).
Before taking this class, I often thought that our advanced society was the standard in which to measure all other societies from, but after reviewing the material in this course, it is impossible to make such a comparison. Many of the people in a culture similar to the U.S. would probably find most of the cultures we have studied to be “slow”, strange, or undesirable. In fact, it seems that many of the societies actually prefer to live the way they do and accept it as normal. “Normal” is a relative term, and it is difficult to establish evidence to label a culture or its characteristics abnormal. What may seem to work here often would be disastrous to other cultures.
The invention of money was a major improvement in peoples’ lives. In the past, people usually had to travel all day to find the person who is willing to exchange their goods. In addition, the goods people want to exchange did not have the standard value of measurement. This led to unequal exchanges. Furthermore, it is not convenient to carry heavy goods from one place to another for an exchange. To solve these issues, money will be the only solution. Later, people tend to develop money from cowry shells to credit cards for the convenience and to improve their society.
The thought of society today can really boggle ones mind. There is a strict set of rules put in place that everyone has to follow, as well as authority that people look up to. Depending on the society, rules can dictate the morality of the people.

Everyone in this world have their own culture and ideas of how the world should be. They have things that have been in their customs for years or even thousands of years. These things are supposed to “keep us united.”(Bansal) But what happens when our own cultures and ideas get challenged by new things that represent change. People start to get chaotic and immediately start to reject something that they do not want to give it a try or does not seem right to them. Modernism is “a rational interpretation of religious, social and economic institutions and phenomena.” (Singh) Meaning, giving it the chance to thrive in a society where the culture and in the beliefs are different. But were there’s change, people are always going to oppose it and will cause an argument, leading to disputes, debates or even wars. But can change be bad or good in the lives of people. How come change has become a symbol of chaos? Why are people scared by change?
