“Tourist Point of View” is a piece written by Duke Ellington on the album “The Far East Suite.” The piece features the piano, the drums, the bass, the baritone saxophone, the tenor saxophone, and the trumpet. It is a medium to fast tempo piece with a steady percussion section in the background as the saxophones, trumpets, and other horns play in the foreground. This selection is in swing rhythmic feel. The piece has a rhythm and tempo that make it seem like you are on a journey. The piece also fits the swing era as the piece really is big band instrumentation and you are able to dance to it. The first adjective I would use to describe this piece is bold. I get this feeling from the drums and the short bursts from the saxophones and trumpet. The percussion section plays steadily throughout the entire piece and sounds like metal banging against each other. This sound can be attributed to the cymbals. The cymbals begin at the opening of the piece and continue until the very end. When the horns are quiet it is all you hear until they come together to build the crescendo. The horns begin at the very beginning but then go silent from six seconds to thirteen seconds as if to show the journey has now started. They then play in bursts, shy at first but becoming more comfortable as the piece progresses along. At 0:56 the melody repeats. At 2:36 the instruments reach their peak and become loud, much louder than they were throughout the beginning. The fast tempo is maintained by the percussion section but the horns play at a more medium style tempo until the midway point. After the 2:36 mark they play much louder and faster in order to show the excitement stage of the journey.
