Created in 1784 as a result of the 1783 Treaty of Paris that ended the American Revolution, The Old Guard served for its first 30 years as the First American Regiment, the Regiment of Infantry, the infantry of the 1st Sub-Legion and the 1st Infantry, becoming the 3rd Infantry in 1815 after the War of 1812.
