“Patience means restraining one's inclinations.”(Tokugawa Ieyasu). In a time of chaos and and disorder, Tokugawa Ieyasu, one of the most powerful leaders in Japan, rose into power unifying Japan and bringing it into a time of peace. Ieyasu was considered an absolutist ruler in his time, meaning that all political, economical, social, and militarial power was in the hand of Ieyasu himself (“Tokugawa Ieyasu” ABC-CLIO). A successful leader ship is with a person who creates an inspiring vision of the future and who motivates people to engage in their vision as well. Tokugawa Ieyasu was an absolutist in Japan, controlling most of the military, economic and social powers of Japan. He built a foundation of unification and peace from a time of chaos and destruction. Tokugawa Ieyasu rose to take leadership of the domain that had been left by his father. He became on of the most powerful rulers in Japan, founding the Tokugawa Shogunate, seizing any rebellion or resistance that may have laid within, leaving Japan in time of peace and unity. Matsudaira Hirotada was involved with a numerous amount of shifty alliances that kept him constantly away. When Ieyasu was very young, his mother was separated from his father’s family due to a change in these father’s alliances. In 1547 a military obstacle compelled Matsudaira Hirotada to send Ieyasu to live with the Imagawa as a hostage. There, Ieyasu learned military and administrative skills of the Imagawa clan and was trained in the military and government arts. There he also developed the enjoyment of falconry, which was practically a hunting game. In the late 1550s he married and had his first of many sons. He began to acquire more and more military experience by leading forces behalf of the clan leader, Imagawa Yoshimoto. Eventually while still a hostage to the clan Ieyasu learned that his father, Matsudaira Hirotada, had been murdered by a close vassal. In 1560 a powerful daimyo, Oda Nobunaga defeated the clan that held Ieyasu captive and he was freed and took control over his family assets. From there he formed alliances with Oda Nobunaga.
