A. Plan of Investigation
The beginning of World War I marked the commencement of the bloodiest war in history, thus far. With this in mind, it is fitting that the bloodiest genocide in history besides the German Holocaust began as well, the Armenian genocide. This examination evaluates to what extent World War I affected the Armenian Genocide.
To comprehend how World War I influenced the Armenian Genocide, research has been conducted to explore; World War I’s contribution towards the severity of the Armenian Genocide’s causalities, foreign aid, and how the genocide was reported to the world. The main sources used for this investigation are the Treatment of the Armenians by James Bryce, which describes the severity of the Armenian condition in Turkey during the World War I era, as well as the Burning Tigris by Peter Balakian, which emphasizes World War I’s conditions and how they affected the Armenians in Turkey during that time.
B. Summary of Evidence
There was stirring animosity between the Armenians and the Turks prior to World War I, in 1894, thousands of Armenians were massacred by the Turkish due to their religious affiliation with Christianity, which juxtaposed the Islamic Turks with whom they lived with (Greene 125). The Armenians living in Turkey have been ostracized ever since, and increased tension between the Turks and Armenians was sparked by the beginning of World War I. On April 15th, 1914 the Armenians asked for German protection from the Turks, which the German government refused to avoid offending the Turkish Government (Gunter 46). In Black Dog of Fate, Balakian illustrates how his Armenian background impacted him as being in the first generation of his family born and raised in America. In the beginning of his memoir, the young Balakian lacked interest in the “old country”. As a kid living in a heavily populated Jewish community, he was envious of his friends walking down the street with their parents to go to the synagogue. Through this feeling of jealousy, he felt as though his Armenian ancestry was stopping him from being like his peers. Because Peter’s grandmother and parents did not give him any information about his family’s past at that time, he did not get to know the similar history Jews and Armenians once shared. At the time of adolescence Armenia’s past put a strain in Peter’s relationship with his father after he wrote a paper on Turkey. “. . . the Turkish term paper marked a turning point; in its wake, my father became even more alien to me” (Balakian 95).

April 24th is the day of grief for many Armenians. Almost every Armenian reminisces on their loved ones that they have lost during this time of year. About 1.5 million Armenians were horrifically dragged out of their homeland, western Armenia. This was to be known as the first Genocide during the 20th century. However, before the Armenian Genocide took place both the Turks and Armenians were peacefully living in the Ottoman Empire for years. Armenians were not great fully equal but they did in fact have no violence at the time. The reason why things were getting out of hand was because of nationalism. It was a new power in the world, which made the cultural alliance very significant. Therefore because of Nationalism the Ottoman Empire began to have problems. The book “Forgotten Fire” was written by Adam Bagdasarian as a piece of historical fiction. Even though this book isn’t non-fiction it’s still based on true facts about the Armenian Genocide. Vahan is a 12 year old boy living in Bitlis, Turkey. Vahan lives the life of privilege as the youngest son of a wealthy family. Being the youngest son he has 3 brothers by the name or Diran, Tavel, and Sisak. Also he has 2 sisters by the name of Oskina and Armenouhi. This story was based on a true story about the Armenian Genocide in Vahan Kenderian point of view. Throughout the story Vahan is constantly losing friends and family while running for his life from the gendarmes. The Armenian Genocide was lead by Turkey which started in 1923 and lasted for 8 years. The Turkish government killed one and a half million Armenians during the 8 year process. This is an essay on the story of Vahan Kenderian before, during, and after the Armenian Genocide and how it changed his life.
They also lived peacefully because of their less-populated population. In 1914, Turks entered the World War I by being on the side of Germany and also the Austria-Hungary Empire. At the same time Armenia was helping Russia to fight with the Turks. Because of this war, Turks tried to remove Armenians from the Ottoman Empire. On April 24, 1915, the Armenian genocide began.
The Turkish government had a reason to get rid of the Armenians. In the Ottoman Empire, Armenians were second class citizens that lived in harmony with the Turks before the forces of nationalism came into the picture. Even though the Armenians had to face higher taxes and second class citizenship, they were treated and accepted pretty well. When nationalism took over, things began to change. The Ottoman Empire began to fall and the Armenians were considered to be the only major Christian minority since all the other minorities had gained their independence already. The Ottoman Empire became known as the "sick man of Europe". An empire that was once strong and an independent power, was now starting to collapse. The Turks had an envision of spreading new-Pan Turkic empire to Central Asia and the only thing that came in the way of doing so was the Armenians.
