Benito Mussolini established himself as a totalitarian dictator by implementing regulations and abolishing any factors that provide individuals an opportunity to oppose his regime. With royal support from King Victor Emmanuel III Mussolini was able to strengthen and solidify his power amoung Italy. Benito Mussolini established himself as a totalitarian dictator by establishing a government managed by a single party, eliminating opposition and introducing policies that restricts Italians from fundamental rights. In order to become a dictator, Mussolini first took total control over the government. Therefore, a single ruling government was established in series events such as introducing the Fascist Grand Council and The Acrebo Law. He denounced basic rights such as freedom of press, assembly, speech and freedom from arbitrary arrest. The results of such actions repress individuals from living a lifestyle based on self-perception and choice. Freedom of press, assembly and speech provides individuals with influence that might alter lifestyle choices. Without the press, Italians truly did not receive adequate information about what was taking place. Lacking freedom of speech restricts individuals from speaking upon their opinions and beliefs. Mussolini benefits from such oppression as there are very few chances for people to overthrow him. Additionally, in 1928 Mussolini removes elections which diminished the slight remainder of democracy that was in place. Citizens were not given the opportunity to vote, therefore cannot determine the appropriate leader for their country. The Chamber of Duties was elected by the Fascist Grand Council and Benito Mussolini was the only option for a leader in Italy. Both Bardach and Levi provide a commendable account of their long nightmarish experience including the impact it had on their lives and the lives of others. The willingness to survive was what drove these two men to achieve their goals and prevent their oppressors from achieving theirs.
