Sherlock Holmes is one of the most well-known characters of all time, but little people know everything about him. There are many questions that are in need of answers to these people like; who is Sherlock Holmes? What illustrates his character especially well? To what extent does Holmes live up to his myth. There is a great deal about Sherlock Holmes that can illustrates his character and who he is as a person. The admiration the characters have for Sherlock and his intelligence is what helps the character live up to his myth.

His intelligence could have been one of the depictions they had of him because people then would have seen him as a really intelligent person.An example of this is, "Really, Mr. Holmes, this exceeds anything which I could have imagined…...I could understand anyone saying that the words were from a newspaper; but that you should name which, and add that it came from the leading article, is really one of the most remarkable things which I have ever known. How did you do it?"(Doyle, Chapter 4). This show just how much of an intelligent person the readers saw him as. The fact that even the characters admit to his cleverness clearly lets readers know that he can be seen as incredibly smart. His ability to put himself in another person’s shoes is another thing that hints to his cleverness. For instance, “So wily was he that he had not trusted himself upon foot, but he had availed himself of a cab so that he could loiter behind or dash past them and so escape their notice” (Doyle, Chapter 4).
