During the great depression in the 1930’s the township of Maycomb County, a quiet little town but louder than usual because of a court trial coming up. Even though that’s going on there is always two siblings running around named Jem and Scout always causing trouble. Jem and Scout Finch are siblings that live with their father Atticus Finch and throughout the book the two siblings become older and separate more. So that’s why Jem and Scout’s relationship changes indefinitely in the book To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee. With progression in the book years go by and the two become older and they get into more fights. So as Jem is growing up he has left her in the dust as she plays the games by herself and not doing anything with her. On the first day of school for Scout she was very excited because she was starting the first grade and Atticus had to give money to Jem to tag along with his sister to school. “Jem told me that during school I wasn’t supposed to bother him. We couldn’t play together because it would embarrass him since he was in fifth grade.”(Lee 4) Jem is more reserved than Scout as he sees her as the aggravating sister so he doesn’t want to see her at school because he thinks that he will be embarrassed because the way she reacts to people. Each summertime in Maycomb County the kids have their best friend Dill drop in to hang out all summer. All they do is play fun games but one summer they played a game called Boo Radley where they play as the Radley’s. Atticus found out about the game and told the kids not to play it again but Jem and Dill had a master plan to just rename the characters. When chapter twelve starts starts with Harper Lee stating that Jem is twelve and Scout saying that he is getting moody with Scout because she wants to play games with him but he doesn't. “Overnight, it seemed, Jem had acquired an alien set of values and was trying to impose them on me: several times he went so far as to tell me what to do. After one altercation when Jem hollered, “It’s time you started bein‘ a girl and acting right!” (Lee 153) Due to Scout asking Jem so many times to play with him he got to a point where he his super agitated and he starts to yell at Scout. In chapter 14 after Scout asked Atticus about what is rape and Aunt Alexandra yelled at her that she may not ask that question. Later that night she was talking to Jem and he said to not annoy Aunt Alexandra anymore and Scout got mad because Jem was telling her to do another thing and he went on to say. “Now I mean it , Scout, you bother Aunty and I’ll – I’ll spank you.”(Lee 34) Scout goes on to say. “You damn morphodite, I’ll kill you!”(Lee 34) It got to a point that Scout got so mad because Jem was treating her like a little kid so they started a fight by kicking and punching.
