During the great depression in the 1930’s the township of Maycomb County, a quiet little town but louder than usual because of a court trial coming up. Even though that’s going on there is always two siblings running around named Jem and Scout always causing trouble. Jem and Scout Finch are siblings that live with their father Atticus Finch and throughout the book the two siblings become older and separate more. So that’s why Jem and Scout’s relationship changes indefinitely in the book To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee. With progression in the book years go by and the two become older and they get into more fights. So as Jem is growing up he has left her in the dust as she plays the games by herself and not doing anything with her. On the first day of school for Scout she was very excited because she was starting the first grade and Atticus had to give money to Jem to tag along with his sister to school. “Jem told me that during school I wasn’t supposed to bother him. We couldn’t play together because it would embarrass him since he was in fifth grade.”(Lee 4) Jem is more reserved than Scout as he sees her as the aggravating sister so he doesn’t want to see her at school because he thinks that he will be embarrassed because the way she reacts to people. Each summertime in Maycomb County the kids have their best friend Dill drop in to hang out all summer. All they do is play fun games but one summer they played a game called Boo Radley where they play as the Radley’s. Atticus found out about the game and told the kids not to play it again but Jem and Dill had a master plan to just rename the characters. When chapter twelve starts starts with Harper Lee stating that Jem is twelve and Scout saying that he is getting moody with Scout because she wants to play games with him but he doesn't. “Overnight, it seemed, Jem had acquired an alien set of values and was trying to impose them on me: several times he went so far as to tell me what to do. After one altercation when Jem hollered, “It’s time you started bein‘ a girl and acting right!” (Lee 153) Due to Scout asking Jem so many times to play with him he got to a point where he his super agitated and he starts to yell at Scout. In chapter 14 after Scout asked Atticus about what is rape and Aunt Alexandra yelled at her that she may not ask that question. Later that night she was talking to Jem and he said to not annoy Aunt Alexandra anymore and Scout got mad because Jem was telling her to do another thing and he went on to say. “Now I mean it , Scout, you bother Aunty and I’ll – I’ll spank you.”(Lee 34) Scout goes on to say. “You damn morphodite, I’ll kill you!”(Lee 34) It got to a point that Scout got so mad because Jem was treating her like a little kid so they started a fight by kicking and punching. It is very common among people to misjudge others prematurely, which are changed once the individual being judged is gotten to know better. Once, Walt Whitman said, “Be curious, not judgmental”. This can be a lesson to a vast number of persons, not excluding Jem and Scout. They are two of the most important characters from the most fiction novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, which takes place in the Great depression, in Maycomb, Alabama. Two of the most misunderstood characters in the whole book are Dolphus Raymond, the town drunkard, and Atticus Finch the town lawyer as well as Jem and Scouts “boring” father. Jem and Scout both misjudge Dolphus Raymond and their own father, Atticus, fate decides to oppose them with two events the trial of Tom Robinson, and the disposition of Tim Johnson, and they are forced to change their absurd opinions.
In the beginning of the story, Jem enjoys the childish games of fantasizing about Boo Radley, taking any dare, and . Scout tells the reader that Jem becomes more and more moody as the story progresses, due to his aging. He thinks more; he shows more compassion; and he is appalled by the unfairness that rears its ugly head in his hometown. While Scout recounts the events of her childhood, the reader fails to notice that “To Kill a Mockingbird” is not a story about the narrator (Scout) maturing, it is actually about Jem maturing, and becoming an adult.
In the beginning of the book Jem is ten. He is innocent and is kind of oblivious to what is happening in the town. In the book Jem represents courage and how that courage is represented changes the older he gets. In the beginning Jem‘s courage is shown when is dared to touch the Radley house, he does that because he never backs down from a dare. That is the Jem‘s and the kids idea of courage. As the story continues Jem sees how courage is not the naive idea of touching the Radely house. He sees Atticus shot a mad dog and Mrs. Dubose fight with morphine addiction. Jem is made to read to her and when he asks why Atticus says: “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.“
Although she struggles at first, Scout develops a higher level of maturity which allows her to control her temper and simply defend her father with her words, without being rude. Jem is also faced with these type of situations and struggles with his anger, for instance when he attacks Mrs. Dubose’s flowers. Atticus goes to great lengths to teach his children that in life, they must learn to stay calm and be kind to everyone, despite how cruel those people may be. Scout and Jem face several situations in which their control is tested, which leads them to “come of age” and develop skills necessary for adulthood. They learn to defend Atticus and themselves by using words and developing self-control.
Imagine just two young kids maturing within a matter of years. Imagine that same two kids, experiencing or understanding things that they aren’t meant to at a young age. Jem and Scout were just like that. They have experienced many things that they shouldn’t have at their age. Scout on the other hand, seems to be the one maturing the most. Throughout this whole essay, you will learn about Jem and Scout’s attributes, personality, and how alike or different they are from each other.
Some kids were not like Jem and Scout and didn’t believe in respecting blacks, they were very disrespectful. Atticus once talked about that children might need police because some of them were wild and didn’t know how to act towards blacks, but that they could be stopped by evasive action (Atticus Chapter 16). Scout thought there was only one kind of people and that’s people regardless of race (Chapter 23, Scout) from what her dad taught her. Jem was the brother of Scout. He was very brave and adventurous and loved to try new things.
At the start of Part Two, Jem starts to grow to be a more mature person and develop a want for wisdom and knowledge. “In addition to Jem’s newly developed characteristics, he had acquired a maddening air of wisdom.” (116) In this quote, Calpurnia is speaking to Scout letting her know that the reason for Jem’s sudden changes is that he is growing up and is almost a young man. The reader acknowledges Jem Finch as Scout’s older brother from the start of this novel. He is brave and strong. “When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow. When it healed, and Jem’s fears of never being able to play football were assuaged, he was seldom self-conscious about his injury.” The reader understands Jem to be the older and wiser one of the two siblings, but also understands Jem to be brave and not confused by life. The reader expects him to understand the ways of life. When the trial took place, Jem is awakened by the fact Tom Robinson was persecuted only because he was black. Jem had changed throughout the story from acting like a child and doing things that children do to becoming more mature and taking part in the community. When Dill had ran away from his mom and stepdad during the summer Jem and Scout had found him under the bed in Scout’s room. When children grow up, they face difficult problems, and. they learn to cope and take responsibility. To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, is a flashback about two kids that spans over a few years. Jem ages from ten to thirteen over the course of the novel, and undergoes much change, as his sister describes him. Over the years, he is exposed to issues adults face, and eventually shows an understanding of racism and innocence. As Jem grows up, his view on courage also changes. Jem follows his father's footsteps, and gets much of his knowledge from him.
Jem is Scout's brother. He is a little older than Scout. He also becomes familiar with the prejudice of Maycomb County through the story. Scout starts to understand people’s needs, opinions, and their points of view. In the beginning, Scout does not really think much about other people’s feelings, unless it directly pertains to her. Jem and Dill decided to create a play based on the life of one of their neighbors, Boo Radley. According to neighborhood rumors, Boo got into a lot of trouble as a kid, stabbed his father with scissors, and never comes out of the house. The children create a whole drama and act it out each day. “As the summer progressed, so did our game. We polished and perfected it, added dialogue and plot until we had manufactured a small play among which we rang changes every day” (Lee 52).
