In our culture a hero shows courage and integrity. A hero doesn 't need a cape or a special power. A hero is someone who makes an impact in someone 's life. Heroes are people like the front of the line D-Day soldiers or the first responders in the 9-11 attacks. As a famous hero once said "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives." This hero’s name is Jackie Robinson. Being threatened, cursed at, and treated badly, Jackie Robinson didn’t fight back and continued to play the game of baseball. Mr.Robinson helped future generations live with peace. It takes a greater deal of courage to stand up for others. Heros are the ones that stand up to others. A hero must need courage. In To KIll A Mockingbird, Atticus shows a great deal of courage. In a conversation Atticus has with Scout, he says, “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win,” (pg.82-83) In this quote Atticus is admitting that he will lose, but is also saying there is no reason not to try. This shows heroism because he is standing up for what is right regardless of what people think of him.. Atticus is trying his best even if other people don’t like it. A hero makes an impact in someone 's life even if the outcome does not affect that person.. Atticus is making an impact in the black community by taking the case. WInning the case won’t make a huge impact for him, but he is still trying his best to make an impact for other people’s lives. Another way Atticus shows heroism by being courageous is standing up against the lynch mob. Risking his life against a bunch of drunk men, Atticus stood guarding Tom Robinson. In the story, Atticus is confronted with an angry lynch mob trying to kill Tom Robinson. The dialog between Atticus and the lynch mob exemplifies courage. A hero must be trusted by people. In a conversation with Jem, Miss.Maudie says “Did it ever strike you that Judge Taylor naming Atticus to defend that dog was no accident? That Judge Taylor might of had his reasons for naming him?”(pg.289) Miss Maudie is questioning the reason behind Judge Taylor assigning Atticus Tom Robinson’s case. The reader realizes the reason behind this is Atticus’s integrity. Judge Taylor knew Atticus would take the hard task by going by the Constitution and giving Tom Robinson a “...fair trial…”. With the community against him, Judge Taylor knew Atticus would stay strong. A hero is trustworthy. Judge Taylor knew Atticus held a lot of trustworthiness that’s the reason why he got the case. Judge Taylor trusted Atticus that he would go by the Constitution and give Tom Robinson fair trial. This shows Judge Taylor trusts Atticus when a man’s life is in jeopardy. This shows Atticus having a huge amount of integrity. Integrity is needed in the formula to make a hero. Without it people wouldn’t believe or trust in you. This will ruin your spirit and make it harder to accomplish goals. Atticus also shows integrity when visiting Tom Robinson’s family after Tom Robinson’s death.”They turned off the highway, rode slowly by the dump and past the Ewell residence, down the narrow lane to the Negro cabins.
