The main characters are Linda Fischer, Jill Brenner, and Wendy. They are all in Mrs. Minish’s fifth grade class. At the beginning of the book, Jill is sitting in class listening to student reports on mammals. Linda Fischer’s report was on whales and that's where the story begins. Linda says blubber is the fat on whales that keeps them warm and Wendy passes a note to Jill that reads "Blubber is a good name for her". The note got passed around the class and after school on the bus Wendy got all the kids to call Linda blubber and played keep away with her coat. A flenser is a person who strips blubber off of whales. The next day at school Jill was disappointed because she doesn't win most original costume. In the girl's Wendy, Caroline, and Jill continued to bully Linda by striping her clothes and making her cry. On Halloween night, Jill and her best friend Tracy put rotten eggs in their neighbour Mr. Machinist's mailbox. The bullying continued at lunch time, when the girls in the classroom tell Linda that she was eating too much so the next day Linda only brought celery and saltine crackers. They bully Linda into saying "I am blubber, the smelly whale of class 206", they forced her to show her underwear and kiss a boy. They talk to their dad and he tells them that he worked with a man called Lice Pecking. He says the he also worked on the boat and he could testify on the fact that Dusty really did dump his waste into the ocean. It turns out he is kidnapped and is unable to testify. They meet his wife Shelly. She tells them that she will help them stop Dusty’s Casino scam. She tells him that she wants to work as a bartender in Dusty’s Boat. She tells them that one night she stays late and sees Dusty dumping the waste from the ship. A few days later he goes to a small pond and sees a park ranger putting up signs that say the water in the pond is contaminated from human waste. Since there are many boats docked in the harbors its impossible to see what boat the waste is actually coming from. They then get the idea to color the waste with a very bright dye and allow after us seeps out the trail of brightly colored water will be tracked back to dusty’s boat. They then go into a food store and purchase 35 bottles of Fuchsia dye. They then tell Shelly their plan. They tell her that Noah will hide in a box full of rum and wait till it is picked up and placed on the ship he then will go into a restroom and Shelly will tack on an out of order sign.

Even though the story might seem ordinary at times, it allows you to look at the big picture, which is the most important aspect. The main character-Brent- displays characteristics that a lot of high school students can relate to; whether male or female. In his cross-country adventure through the U.S., exciting and unexpected moments never cease to amuse you. All kinds of people contribute to Brent’s change of attitude; one comment or story or facial expression at a time. And possibly the best part of it all is that you get all of this educational, amusing literature in only 133 pages.

After he uncovers Teddy’s paper world, the uncle reacts in a manner of ignorance and derision, mocking him for his decision to occupy himself with paper dolls. The uncle dubs Teddy as a “great big lummox … playing with paper dolls”, insulting Teddy for his hobbies with a tone of amusement and hysteria. In spite of Teddy’s agitation, the uncle prefers to make a mockery out of Teddy rather than accepting his unique hobbies, suggesting the uncle’s belief that Teddy’s activities are unfitting of someone of his age. In addition, Teddy’s uncle further aggravates Teddy by continuously ridiculing him, leading him to eventually destroy his treasured paper world. Despite Teddy’s attempts at validating the reality of his paper dolls, the uncle “burst into laughter, his cheeks the colour of a tomato.” Teddy’s uncle persistence in mocking Teddy implies his disapproval of Teddy’s world, believing that his world is ludicrous and absurd for someone of his age to be occupied with. Reading minds isn’t something that humans are normally able to do, but is it impossible? Each person has their own mind and their own lives, everyone is their own. Many people have their own points of views that don’t always add up to what others may see. Though, books have great ways of showing this; in books, when a situation is happening or a character is thinking, outsiders are often unaware of the thoughts that aren’t their own. Where She Went and To Kill a Mockingbird show many examples of this, through internal conflicts, being someone no one else knows and is different on the outside than the inside. In both novels, characters go through the universal theme, things aren’t always what they seem.
A twelve year old young lady named Jamie Kelly lives in a major house with her puppy, Stinker, and her mother and father. She goes to Mackerel Middle School. Her closest companion is eleven year old Isabella. Her unbest companion is Angeline. Jamie is compelled to compose this journal. She realizes that her past journals have been silly so she flushes them out of her head.
The story follows three girls- Jeanette, the oldest in the pack, Claudette, the narrator and middle child, and the youngest, Mirabella- as they go through the various stages of becoming civilized people. Each girl is an example of the different reactions to being placed in an unfamiliar environment and retrained. Jeanette adapts quickly, becoming the first in the pack to assimilate to the new way of life. She accepts her education and rejects her previous life with few relapses. Claudette understands the education being presented to her but resists adapting fully, her hatred turning into apathy as she quietly accepts her fate. Mirabella either does not comprehend her education, or fully ignores it, as she continually breaks the rules and boundaries set around her, eventually resulting in her removal from the school.
The story begins describing Meg: a not so smart girl who had constantly been in trouble specially for defending her family members and the fact that her father who has been missing for over a year; during the story she changes to better, in fact she is my favorite character because despite of her fears she didn’t give up. The book also describes: her mother who was a beautiful and intelligent woman; her little brother Charles Wallace, an intelligent boy who was capable of reading minds; Calvin O Calvin O'Keefe who was a talented athlete in Meg's school and showed interest in Meg.
