Being part of a diverse community will improve a human’s personality and its behavior toward others. In order to build a diverse community, every person needs to feel that they will be included and important. It doesn’t matter in which ethnic, racial, race or tribe he or she belongs to. University is a place where you can find the definition of Diversity. The main reason behind the idea of founding the American University of Afghanistan was to make an educational community of all the peoples who live in this country, a campus where students from different ethnics can join and get access to standard education. And AUAF is the place where you cannot just see, but even feel Diversity in a positive way.
First and foremost AUAF is the only educational society in Afghanistan, where you’ll see students for almost all ethnics and races. As a freshman what I have found at the beginning days in the campus is that students are not much interested about each other ethnic, race or language, instead they are more likely to talk and learn about each other’s culture and differences in their point of view which clearly shows how much diversity is important in AUAF.

The only way to become more culturally competent is to communicate with the peoples who are from different ethnics and have a different culture. Treating every person in a same way could also be a good step to go beyond the culture and ethnic boundaries. In our country people thinks that recognizing differences will divide people from each other. In fact, a person can expect to live with people from different cultures, background, and histories that it is a mix of diverse multicultural experience. Even more when a student can talk with another student from a different part of the world with totally different culture, this was my case when I interview my friend from Nigeria.
This essay will be arguing that colleges and universities should promote more efforts to diversify and create equal representation of all students. Attending higher education institution for minorities has been an uneasy struggle and one that few minorities accomplish. The dilemma of African American enrollment for example, in a college lecture hall at Texas A&M containing 250 seats, only a maximum 4 out of 250 seats will contain African American students. The answer can be found in the academic and extracurricular activities I have participated in. Since joining high school I have participated in a number of activities including band, STEMS Club, Culinary Club, National Honors Society, and Future Business Leaders of America to name a few. This method teaches through and to the students’ strengths. This kind of professional development training does not occur during a one day training, course, or reading book. The cultural proficiency process takes time and is an ongoing but has to start somewhere (Diversity Toolkits). I would implement the five basic cultural competence skill areas in my professional development for my staff. Addressing Cultural sensitivity permits people to comprehend that there are differences between cultures. Furthermore, having awareness in the differences between cultures permits a culturally competent person to communicate effectively with others that are outside of one’s realm. Some of the differences of Cultural sensitivity can be discovered while traveling outside of the country, such as through Cross-cultural sensitivity experiences. Likewise, a culture has its own norms and beliefs to how one should dress; how one should greet others, such as by referring to a significant individual by his or her first name or surname (comprehending which name should be stated first in foreign names); and/or what foods are permitted to eat or forbidden to eat or understanding what may offend a person (e.g. not accepting a home cooked meal). There are norms, taboos, cultural cues, and cultural etiquette standards that are significant to learning about one’s culture before exploring another country or while working with people who are from your country but who are part of another racial group. It takes time and patience to build a high level of Cultural sensitivity.
