Following the Second World War, tensions quickly rose between the United States and the Soviet Union along with their corresponding allies. This was a result of the Soviet Union’s communist ways in Europe, sparking the Cold war from 1948-1953 and again from 1958-1962. Much like during the war, it was not unheard of for the intelligence agencies of countries, such as the Soviet Union, to send agents to the enemy’s side so that they may exploit the enemy’s plans and remain one step ahead. However, as depicted in the film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the Cold War was not a time of action and of exact plans, such as during the war. However, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a story of fiction about the British Intelligence agency, referred to as “The Circus,” and the Soviet Union Intelligence lead by Karla. The movie was set amidst the time of the Cold War, but failed to reveal the political aspect of the war but highlighted some social challenges within the time period, including homosexual oppression and female oppression. The movie exploited the home lives of each of the characters, which distracted from what there was of historical value. For example, the film highlighted Jim Pirdeau’s relationship with Haydon, but revealed that they could not be together. As for female oppression, Connie Sach was unfairly fired because she was investigating the rumor of a Soviet Spy. The movie also exploited the abuse Irina received from her husband, and how Smiley’s wife had an affair. The movie mainly focuses on Smiley, as lonely male protagonist from the upper class.
