Timeless and Universal Classic Poems
Classic literature is timeless and universal. It must enrich the mind, resonate with the reader in regards to human condition and is not limited to a specific period of time; the message must be eternal. A classic poem’s meaning is conveyed in a discernible yet eloquent manner. Letters from a Father and Vespers are two poems that were thought-provoking, both examined human behavior/condition and provided insight to universal truths. Both A Primer of a Daily Round and A Way to Love God failed to inspire further contemplation or spark any deep sentiments.

These letters demonstrate how the focus of one’s pain and ailments is mentally debilitating. The focus of many of the letters go into the detail of the mother and father’s multiple ailments. Their ailments have consumed their life and by doing so, have lost the ability to enjoy life. As a result, the daughter decided to share her love of bird-watching and brought them a feeder. Following this gift, her father wrote another letter and in this letter, he complained about their pain and the birds. In the third letter you can see that they have begun to enjoy not only bird-watching but nature as well when he requests book about birds. This poem shows how these parents spent so much time fretting about their deteriorating health that they forgot to simply enjoy life and that they are still living. This universal truth that people tend to spend so much time thinking about what they don’t have and can’t do, instead of appreciating what they do have. The way in which the poet slowly marks the differences in the parents’ behavior was masterful. This poem serves as a reminder to find joy/beauty in each day and that is an unequivocal truth. It is a somber poem of failure and the loss of hope. It is as if the narrator is letting God know, in case he wasn’t aware, that she has failed in her responsibilities. It has a lot of dark themes and even though the narrator has been dedicated to bringing her harvest to fruition as an offering but due to forces" out of her control like the heavy rains, it has killed the harvest in what the narrator believes to be because of God’s “extended absence.” This poem is thought-provoking, discusses moral issues, universal truths and is expressed in a very effective manner. Vespers is classically simple and represents common misgivings people experience. A classic poem that will always echo true
