In the novel “ Tuesdays with Morrie,” Morrie shared many aphorisms with MItch during their Tuesday visits. Morrie used these aphorisms to explain how his past has affected his present self. By sharing these aphorisms with Mitch, he hoped that it would change his outlook on life. The three aphorisms speak the loudest are “Don’t assume that it is too late to get involved,” “... if you really want it, then you’ll make your dream happen,” and “ Don’t let go too soon, but don’t hang on too long.” The first aphorism which appeals to me is “ Don’t assume that it is too late to get involved.” This statement fits in my life by learning the game of golf at an older age. Wisdom is a part of this story because morrie has very good judgement, and experience. Morrie is very aware and responsible, morrie told some very great life lessons to morrie and to the class that he taught. More is a very wise man who has been thr0ugh a lot of rough stuff in his life, these hard times he has been through has taught him many new and helpful things that he tries and shares with those around him. In the movie, “Tuesdays With Morrie”, Mitch’s old professor, Morrie, is diagnosed with ALS. Mitch finds out that he is dying, and wants to fulfill the promise to visit him after graduation. Mitch starts visiting him. He talks to him and goes places with him, but when his condition worsens it is hard to go anywhere. Conflicts arise in his love life and work, but Mitch keeps visiting Morrie every Tuesday.

The key ingredient of a happy and successful life, as taught to Mitch by Morrie, is love. Morrie made the following statement in the movie. “We must love one another or perish.” It explains the belief that if one does not have love in their life, they are not truly living. In Mitch’s life, love for his girlfriend Janine took second place to his demanding career in journalism. However, when Janine leaves him because of this insensitivity, he realizes that Morrie’s words are true and strives to change. Janine accepts Mitch back upon seeing the transition he has gone though. Mitch’s commitments at work were a big problem in their relationship and he understood that in order to restore the relationship he must let go of these. Love was the first personal commitment Mitch lived up to, replacing work deadlines with a marriage date. Love becomes the driving force in Mitch’s life.
Morrie makes Mitch realizes the importance of family and this gives him the motivation to reach out and rekindle and grow his relationship with Peter. If they were unable to resume contact this would not have made Morrie’s lessons less important. His words would still stand true, even if Peter refused to speak to Mitch. We are unable to control the actions of others but as long as we are willing to try we succeed.
The answer to that varies for all of us. To Mitch, the paycheck and the luxury that he brings are clearly more important than his family. But, Morrie made him realize one thing: the baffle that comes with the tension of opposites always ends with the victory of love. No matter what crossroads you face in the course of your life, especially with one decision-making process.
How to give a summary of such a powerful book seems to me to be beyond comprehension. The book has left me so full of life, so committed to changing the way I behave, the way I think, the way I feel about life, death, how I treat others, and how I spend the hours of everyday. The book has left me with thousands of zooming thoughts in my head, like moths circling a light bulb, just trying to feel the soothing heat being radiated from it’s ember glow. The way I feel after reading this book, must be how an immigrant felt when taking those first steps onto American soil. Extremely overwhelmed yet so filled with anticipation for the new life they can lead, if only they make the right choices for themselves, and not fall into the pitfalls of society’s culture, but make a culture of their own. “ Invest in the human family. Invest in people. Build a community of those you love and who love you”
Simplicity has been lost in society, and it’s due to the people who make up our society. Simplicity is defined by Webster’s dictionary as, “ The quality or state of being not complex, and or consisting of very few parts.” People today are always trying to get the newest technology, or build something bigger, and better than the last. Morrie Schwartz a character in Tuesdays with Morrie lives a very simplistic life and takes advantage of all the little things. A major theme in the book is how Mitch lives his life prior to the meetings with Morrie. He works for the media, which could also be viewed as a symbol. Work takes up so much of his life and he doesn’t have time to live as the way that Morrie did. Morrie despised the mediea, believing that it was driven by greed, violence, and superficiality. He was encouraged by Morrie to quit his job, and it was the his office went on strike and left him jobless where he really discovered lifes meaning. Tuesdays with Morrie is a story that made me think more than any other story. Not because it was difficult to comprehend, but it made me think about what the literature meant, how what Morrie said affected Mitch, and how it affected me. Tuesdays with Morrie makes many questions roll through my head like, “Am I living my life the way Morrie tells Mitch? Am I happy with myself? Will I work to make myself happy and achieve my goals in adult life?
Morrie’s messages about life in this book were not solely directed fro Mitch; they are meant for anyone who is willing to take the time to listen. For me, there is not only one thing I learned from Morrie. I learned that I should not take life for granted because you never know when it will be over. Even though I have heard it many times I never really believed that what the media says is not necessarily true, until I read this book. Finally, I learned that love and compassion, not only for others, but also for oneself are essential in living a happy life. It does not matter if someone is rich, or if they are poor for that matter. The truth is that as long as you lived your life as best you could, you learned from your mistakes, and you are happy with yourself, then you lead a fulfilling life.
