Thomas Hobbs had some very good words to say about what our society would be like without government. He said that life would be “war of all against all,” and that life would be “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.” Life would be miserable and disgusting if everybody got their own ways. The boys in the Lord of the Flies had the right ideas, but they couldn’t execute them properly. They had some rules but couldn’t enforce them too well because there was no true authority on the island, and that is why they failed at maintaining a solid settlement.
