The Positive Side In People's Differences
“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.”(Audre Lorde). This quote was written by an African American female writer who was a civil rights activist. It shows that variations are not the only factor that separates society, it is the lack of ability to know our differences. Accepting others who are different than yourself may lead to positive and negative factors. The growth of knowledge in the real world and the creation of good friendships are positive factors of why people should accept others who are different than themselves. However, the limitation of a culture in society can also be a negative reason of why others should

For example, the author says, “Yonatan could hardly imagine what people were dreaming of in the development towns and collective along the northern border, in the West Bank settlements and Arab villages, the immigrant absorption centers full of broken trailers and tired people left to broil out in the desert sun.”(2) Here, Yonatan, the main character, did not know much about how differently people view the world. After asking a couple of people of his neighborhood what they would wish for, most of them responded with “health, money, bigger apartments, either to shave off a couple of years or a couple of pounds” However, he asked others to answer the question and an old Holocaust survivor just wanted the Nazis to take accountability of what they did. This quote demonstrates that because Yonatan went and asked a variety of people about their wishes, his knowledge of others desires grew. Yonatan found out that because of the people's past experiences, those experiences would determine what they wanted to wish for. People say that when meeting someone, the person can be taught something new. When people are curious about others and ask the right questions, they can learn a lot of interesting things. A person will never know, they might get a spark of inspiration or a brilliant insight from someone when they least expect it. The creation of positive friendships is also a reason why people should accept others who are different than
Criss Jami, a modern American poet, essayist, and philosopher, best known for his book, Killosophy, wrote, “It’s not at all hard to understand a person; it’s only hard to listen without bias.” In today’s world, differences form an obstinate barrier in relationships with others. To overcome this tremendous obstacle, one must resolve to communicate, look past stereotypes, and extend friendship to those who are different.
By every individual accepting and acknowledging that we are all different then there will be mutual respect for each other’s cultural difference. When these differences are explored in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment, they are more than simply tolerating others but that through these differences are instead commended and embraced. People become aware of each other’s difference and uniqueness such as religion, sexual orientation, race, gender, age and beliefs. When this is embraced by the health care providers then there will be improved care.
Diversity is a singularity. People are different. Diversity isn’t something we have, it’s something we are. But we can’t judge others because they’re different from us. We can’t judge until we know what’s inside them. We’re different and that’s what makes us special and unique. We need to judge people by their personality and not by their looks. Even know the look might say a lot about the personality, still we can’t say that they are bad or nice just because of the way they look. We can’t all be rich, well-dressed or perfect all the time, because we are imperfect and that’s what makes who we are. We can’t win a fight with imperfection, but the best way to deal with it is to accept that we will never be perfect. And that isn’t a bad thing.
We live in a world of differences. Our world differs view with the people we encounter, the things we learn and the ways we perceive things . We are world of individuals where no person is exactly alike or no group of people is exactly alike. Society is made up of different cultures and religions. Most of us belong to some type of group, these groups give us comfort, we are always more comfortable with those who are similar to us. But when does this become detrimental? Our grouping and separation becomes detrimental when we are presented with someone with differences. The lack of integration within different cultures in today’s society is what keeps us grounded in our own ignorance. It is detrimental to the individual because it keeps us from
Humans are a stereotypical lifeform. Disregarding all backgrounds and cultures, humans are constantly categorizing others subconsciously and blatantly. Due to past experiences and social observations, I have come to the realization that there is a way in which humans are taught how different societies define differences among different people and this is way that varies from culture to culture.
The roles of diversity and uniqueness are a crucial part of society today. Without these qualities being enforced into the American character, people won't produce thoughtful ideas that could help shape America. Both authors illustrate the evil effect of conformity in society and support how one should be self reliant, not phony, and confident in their own beliefs and ideas.
Firstly, the presence of individuality within society permits individuals to identify societal barriers because such choices are, essential. Tom’s essay speaks of how “historically, people have not been kind to that which is different”, yet however, she encourages this drive within individuals as she goes on to say, “this [in fact] is what has driven the evolution of society.” Though many historical events such as the Holocaust and the Trans-Atlantic slave trade have not been greeted with gratitude nonetheles...
Thomas Paine said, “To argue with a man who has renounced the use and authority of reason, and whose philosophy consists in holding humanity in contempt, is like administering medicine to the dead, or endeavoring to convert an atheist by scripture.” In a world so diverse, it is difficult to find relationships that don’t have conflict. An abundance of these conflicts happen by narrow mindedness towards others cultures. Even though hostility and narrow-mindedness occur, that is not always the case. The possibility of unity with different people are possible, you will even find similarities that you wouldn’t have found before knowing that person.
Learning about the different culture we have is vital in bringing people together as it can make known aspects in our lives that are important as well show the common practices we may share thus the need to treat people differently based on what they believe. It is also important to note that when dealing with diversity issues, people will be more willing to deal with tough issues when presented with hope rather than when they know that or feel like there is no hope with regards to a certain condition (Ng & Metz,
There is a long way to go for any tolerance of difference in our society, whether it be race, gender, or orientation. However with the growing amount of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) community, there really isn’t any other option but to accept that people are innately just different. This is a good think if we can come to accept the differences in each other we can see different viewpoints to our social problems and evolve as a
To gain a better understanding and develop a positive attitude and acceptance of the varying ethnic and cultural differences we have in society today in the modern world, we need to step back and examine and study the philosophical views of ancient philosophers and attempt to modify the traditional mind set of today’s population in regards to racism. We are in fact all human, all cultures, all ethnic groups, all races, all skin color and cannot be compared to other living creatures, we can make judgments, we know right from wrong, we all have the opportunity to succeed. We as the human race must re-evaluate our morals which define our personal character and strive to make healthier and better decision in our lives on issues that affect our fellow man, as well as being ethical in our social lives and activities.
We live in a world that is made up of many different types of people races religions etc. we do not live alone, borders are open you can travel and meet people from all around the world. This allows us the opportunity to get to know many people, which allows us to realize that we are all different and to respect one another all must be very tolerant.
Living in a diverse world should be something a person should be proud of. Getting to know a person’s culture and their beliefs should be a wonderful ability. Respecting one another is important, even though a lot of people still disregard that, which should discontinue. We should all start to learn how to make this world a better place,
In one of my favorites books Anna Karenina written by Leo Tolstoy says "I think... if it is true that there are as many minds as there are heads, then there are as many kinds of love as there are hearts." (135-6) This quote really reflects the essence of the term "Diversity". For me diversity does not relies on skin color, height, weight. Diversity for me is the fluctuation of ideas, sentiments and beliefs. The discrepancy of ideology between collies. Personally, diversity plays an exorbitant role in my life. Every person is an universe caressing with the next universe (person). Thus, each universe has its personal standards, and the other people are deviance of the self. What I'm trying to insinuate is that people think differently from each
“We, as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves.” Barbara Jordan. People shouldn’t be judged by the way they are or the way they act. In this essay I will analyze that just because people are different from you doesn’t you treat them different. Everyone has their own personality that’s what makes everyone unique because we’re all different. Like in the story “Texas v. Majority Opinion” people fought to keep the American flag but others wanted the flag burned. People have the right to speak their minds and fight for what they believe in to protect the things they cherish most. Like in the short story by Etgar Keret “What of This Goldfish Would You Wish?” some people like things that other people don’t and some people like to stay away from other people because they don’t want to be around all the drama or to get judged by other people.
