Parent child relationships, one of the strongest bonds a person could have. No matter which parent you side with, you still try to support and love each other the same. In the novel “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe the main parent child relationship lies between a father and son. Or at least this is how Achebe portrays it in the novel. When authors use motifs in their writing it helps readers get a grasp on key concepts and ideas, while helping authors characterize their characters. Motifs give chances for the characters in novels to constantly change and develop. In this case parent child relationships are used to characterize and develop Okonkwo and Nwoye, two main characters. While using motifs, it helps show the changes in characters by bringing up a similar subject, but getting a different reaction. Although in this novel, characters’ parent child relationships were negative experiences, it helped grow the characters’ strength. Helping them push forwards towards the futures that they desired. Parent child relationships can make or break people, whether positive or negative, both are experiences to be used later on in life.
