The theme of “These Shining Lives” is the desire for economic independence, it enhances a women’s self worth and shows the exploitation of women worker’s. The play is a historical drama. The play writes message was to show the audience a women desire for independence and being something other than a wife and mother. It shows the struggles and dangers that a women face in the workplace during that time period. I thought the play was really touching. It made me appreciate being young women in the 21st century. Catherine and the three other women (Francis, Pearl, and Charlotte) goes to meet a lawyer named Leonard Grossman after Catherine was fired from the Radium Dial. They decided to file a lawsuit against the Radium Dial for Catherine’s health condition. Fast-forward to when the women informs the audience that Catherine finally won her case, which lasted for seven years, 6 losses and won after its last appeal to the United States Supreme Court. After Catherine was compensated with $5,661 on July 1936, she died 21 days later. The case change the State of Illinois law, it made companies held responsible for the safety of their worker. Question 5 Catherine and I are alike in the sense that we love and caring to those we love. We are also both really passionate in what we do. But, I don’t think that I’m strong as her. I really admire her for her strength. So for the monologue, I really wanted to portray to the audience her strength. The adjustment that I made was to speak loudly and slowly to attempt to get Catherine’s message across and show her strength. These Shining Lives chronicles the true story of Catherine Donohue and three other of the other women who worked in the Radium Dial factory during the 1920’s and 1930’s. Despite the women being knowingly mistreated and their health dismissed by the management, they refuse to let the company get away with this injustice and go to the courts. While the fight goes on, the friendship between the women remains strong and Catherine eventually wins her case.
The play, These Shining Lives by Melanie Marnich can be summed up just as the main character, Catherine entails. It is “not a fairy tale, though it starts like one, and it is not a tragedy, though it ends like one” (Scene 1, p. 9). Truly, this is an accurate depiction of what the author intended to convey to her audience. It is remarkable how the author was able to twist and spins the words to form the messages she desired. Be that as it may, not everything is splayed across the ink bound pages as precisely as the stars littering the night sky.
Hence, upon analyzing the story, one can conclude the certain themes that parallel through the pages. Firstly, a theme of unity and trust is present at the end of the play. This is supported by the image of the cathedral, which is a place of unity. Most importantly, the notion of equality among people is the main theme within this story. The narrator starts as a biased, idiot, who dislikes all people that are not like himself. He even at times is rude to his wife. Ironically, it takes a blind man to change the man that can literally see, to rule out the prejudices and to teach him that all men are created equal.
Working was the strategic to acquire the money, which according to the poster is the main key to achieve an independence. The message in the poster “Now I can buy the things I love” expose the dependency of women in the poster’s time; even though the time of slavery was done by the nineteenth forty’s women were economically slaves of their husband and the stereotypes of the society. To illustrate, women could not buy nothing unless their husband gives them money to do it. That it is why, the poster is so relevant and significant to women because it opens a pass to walk into the independence and change the typical role of the women. Most lived in a state little better than slavery. They had to obey men, because in most cases men held all the resources and women had no independent means of subsistence” (Wojtczak). The Yellow Wallpaper, takes a devastating look at the oppressive relationships between middle class husband and wife, doctor and patient. The Story of an Hour describes a moment of awareness when Mrs. Mallard realizes how she really feels about her life and situation. The news of her husband’s death shocks her into an awareness that seems to overtake her against her will. Mrs. Mallard and the narrator both express they want to be free, but unfortunately they achieve freedom through insanity and death. Freedom is accomplished in an unusual way in The Yellow Wallpaper and The Story of an hour; the freedom these women attained is not readily obtainable to most women in the 19th century.

That period was the time where the perception of individuals in general dealt with countless restraints. The women were the ones who were affected the most because these values had strongly influenced them. Woman behaved in a way how their husband’s wanted because they were living their lives by the controlled ways of the man. The story of “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and the story of “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin are two stories that show accurately the way how women were treated at that time; exactly Edna and the other women. I want to discuss that the main characters of these two stories; Edna and the other women’s liberty were interdicted by their husbands. Finally, the way how both stories end; Edna’s suicide, and the other women’s insanity; demonstrates their inability to escape from the unhappy reality. By focusing my essay on the theme of feminism, I will first analyze the authors’ past experience and then associate how it contributes in both of their short stories. In Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”, the struggle for freedom is dominant. The main character, Mrs. Mallard, stands for a woman who is struggling internally and externally for freedom. After the sudden loss of her husband, Mrs. Mallard gets a taste of the freedom she was lacking in her marriage. Like Mrs. Mallard, women throughout history have struggled to find freedom and success away from their husbands. Chopin herself only became successful after the loss of her husband. In “The Story of an Hour”, Chopin shows women’s struggle for freedom during the Victorian period through Mrs. Mallard’s struggle for her own freedom.
Around the world children are able to express their creativity daily through the medium of play. Children play everywhere, at home, outside, at parks, at school, and many other places. This activity is enjoyable yet at the same time children learn how to solve problems, cooperate, take turns, and get along with others without even realizing that they are learning. Additionally, they develop motor skills such as climbing, running, grasping, and balancing all while participating in various types of play. Authors, Gordon and Browne state “Through play, children learn about the world: what color purple is, how to make matzo balls, and how to be a friend” (120). Therefore, play is not only fun for the child; it can also become a learning experience.
