I find the book A Lesson Before Dying paired with the theme heroism to be very conflicting because while there are aspects of that in the book I do not find it to be the main theme. Becoming a man does not mean that you are becoming a hero or even helping someone come to that point does not make you a hero. That makes you a decent human being and a friend. The Reverend states, “ When you act educated, I’ll call you Grant. I’ll even call you Grant, when you act like a man,” (pg.216). The Reverend even goes on telling Grant that he knows nothing about his own people. The Reverend is seen as a hero by his community and he sees them as his people, his friends, or maybe even family.
