Timothy Findley was a famous Canadian novelist who wrote for various television series and stage performances. Before his death on June 21, 2002, Findley completed one of his most renowned short stories called “War”. Findley wrote this story revolving around the life of a young boy named Neil. Neil is dreading to accept that his father is joining the army and going off to fight in the war. Throughout the story, Findley demonstrated numerous characteristics that uncovered Neil’s inner conflicts. Firstly, Neil’s character starts off being shown as fragile. What prompts his aggression, again, is the conflicts Neil has with himself. Of course, one of the key examples of Neil’s aggression is his violence towards his father. Neil’s father came to the Curries house and began looking for Neil. Neil was running towards the loft “but first [he] had to ward off [his] father … so [he] threw a stone” (131) Neil is fighting off his father here as he does not want to face him and discuss his aggression. Timothy Findley is implying that the protagonist is feeling aggressive due to his internal struggle with himself about feeling ignored and unloved. Furthermore, Neil’s sense of mistreatment leads him to be unresponsive and just violent and aggressive. When Neil’s dad finally approaches him he asks, “Neil aren’t you going to explain why you’re angry? [Neil] thought for a minute and then [he] didn’t answer him after all… [Neil’s dad] looked worried” (132). The audience can infer that Neil resorts to aggression and violence rather than talking because he feels that no one listens to him and no one cares about him, this again, connecting back to Findley’s original theme about internal struggles. Inevitably on his metaphoric passage to heroism, Robert has many turning points in relation to Marxism that change his outlook on the world and war around him like the class division, the oppressors and the oppressed and, the mini revolutions that take place in a struggle for power. Findley presents the reader with a story that challenges the conceptions and truths that humans believe of human nature. Through the plot of Robert, Findley begins to convey the message that life goes on and as humans the only truth is that we are becoming. This is similarly seen in Marxism as it believes the cycle is ongoing but slowly and surely society is becoming. In “War” Neil’s attempts to communicate non-verbally through his behaviour are ineffective. However, in both stories Neil reaches understanding through powers of observation, even when the adults are unable to communicate through words. In reaching understanding, Neil takes a step towards adulthood himself. Through the process of looking at Effie’s smiles and looking at his father’s wounded face in the photograph, Neil is able to decode the mystery of their actions.
Many times readers lose interest in stories that they feel are not authentic. In addition, readers feel that fictitious novels and stories are for children and lack depth. Tim O’ Brien maintains that keeping readers of fiction entertained is a most daunting task, “The problem with unsuccessful stories is usually simple: they are boring, a consequence of the failure of imagination- to vividly imagine and to vividly render extraordinary human events, or sequences of events, is the hard-lifting, heavy-duty, day-by-day, unending labor of a fiction writer” (Tim O’ Brien 623). Tim O’ Brien’s “How to Tell a True War Story” examines the correlation between the real experiences of war and the art of storytelling. In O’Brien’s attempt to bridge the gap between fiction and non-fiction the narrator of the story uses language and acts of violence that may be offensive to some. The novel follows Robert Ross, a Canadian military officer, as he suffers through the horrors of the war both on and off the battlefield. As the novel progresses, Robert evolves from an innocent young man to a deeply troubled and broken individual. This loss of innocence plays a great role in Robert’s development as a character and is highlighted by his experiences with sex and death, experiences that eventually leads to his downfall.
With this in mind, Brenda cleverly obuses Neil’s open mindedness in formulating a scenario to enable a source of faith and new level of relation to develope among themselves. Once brought into action, she uncovers the other side to her integrity. Respectively, Neil shows benevolence to that part of her that seems to understand him deep inside, “There among the disarrangement and dirt I had the strange experience of seeing us, both of us, placed among disarrangement and dirt: we looked like a young couple who just had moved into a new apartment; we had suddenly taken stock of our furniture, finances, and future [...] ” (68) However since she has grown accustomed into a new rank of social status, and away from “the disarrangement and dirt” of Newark, she has become more attracted to life she occupies anon in Short Hills. This knowledge disillusions her that wealth advantages come with power, and that power is her responsibility. She through her selfish and noble heart feels the need to improve Neil, because it’s her past for a reason. The protagonists that Findley creates are often similar and connected to the hardships that they eventually encounter and defeat or that which they are defeated by. Findley takes his readers back in time to the First World War, displaying his knowledge of history and research, where the hardships of a young soldier’s battles internally and externally are brought to the reader’s attention in his historical-fiction novel The Wars. Findley writes about the reality and absurdity of the First World War, and takes the reader’s on a journey through the active reading process to find what is “sane” and “Insane” throughout the duration of the novel. Following the journey of the protagonist, Robert Ross as he enlists in the Canadian Army after the death of his sister Rowena, and undoubtedly is the turning point of the text and ideally where Findley initiates the active reading process, and where the contents placed in the story by Findley, are analyzed and opinionated based on the reader’s perception and subjectivity of truth. In “War and Massacre” by Thomas Nagel, Nagel argues that there are limits on what can be done to an enemy even its for the sake of overall good. He believes that such an idea is grounded on the principles of Absolutism, where morality is determined by the action itself (deontology). This is contrary to the view of Utilitarianism, which relies on the premise that Morality is determined by its consequences (Consequentialism). Although could one in fact generate such a moral structure around war? Do the ends justify the means in War? Theme is a literary element used in literature and has inspired many poets, playwrights, and authors. The themes of love and war are featured in literature, and inspire authors to write wartime romances that highlight these two themes. Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms deals with the collective themes in the human experience such as love and the reality of war. A Farewell to Arms is narrated from the perspective of Fredric Henry, an ambulance driver in the Italian army, and pertains to his experiences in the war. The novel also highlights the passionate relationship between Henry and Catherine Barkley, a British nurse in Italy. Henry’s insight into the war and his intense love for Catherine emphasize that love and war are the predominant themes in the novel and these themes contribute to bringing out the implicit and explicit meaning of the novel. Being a part of the Italian army, Henry is closely involved with the war and has developed an aversion to the war. Henry’s association with the war has also made him realise that war is inglorious and the sacrifices made in war are meaningless. Specifically, Henry wants the war to end because he is disillusioned by the war and knows that war is not as glorious as it is made up to be. The state of affairs and the grim reality of the war lead Henry towards an ardent desire for a peaceful life, and as a result Henry repudiates his fellow soldiers at the warfront.
