The Cask of Amontillado uses a number of symbols throughout the story. Symbolism is what help convey the message that Edgar Allen Poe sends to his readers. The symbols that were used in the story were the names of Fortunado and Montresor, the title of the story, Fortunado’s conical cap, the setting, and the heraldry. The names of the two main characters had a meaning that set the tone for the whole story. If the reader knows what the character’s name mean they can predict what will happen in the story based off of their names. The name of Fortunado means fortunate and the name Montreso means treasure. Montressor used the amontillado to get Fortunado to go to the catacomb. He uses the amontillado because he knows that Fortunado is a wine conessoir and he will not resist the urge to try the wine that he has not tasted before. Amontillado symbolizes pleasure, and Fortunato is willing to travel through a graveyard to get what he wants. The wine betrays him and the Amontillado signals his death. His dark and gothic themes stems from the deaths that he encountered throughout life. He witnessed the death of his mother at a young age and eventually witnessed the death of his brother and wife. Writing is a way for people to express their selves. According to an online article “If there are things that are stressing you out, getting them down on paper to acknowledge them may help to alleviate the anxiety so you can get some rest (Hebert, 2012)”. Writing could have been his way to overcome all of the deaths that he faced by making creative stories to entertain
