In the book Peace Like A River one of the main themes are sacrifice.The meaning of sacrifice is the act of giving up something that you want to keep especially in order to get or do something else or to help someone. There are many characters in this book who shows perfect examples of sacrifice such as Ruben,Jeremiah, Davy, Roxanna, Jape Waltzer, and Andreeson.
One of the examples in the book was when Davy sacrificed his freedom and being with his family by killing Tommy Basca and Israel Finch on page 51 “Then he lifted the bat, the knot-head, and Davy fired and Israel went backwards into Tommy Basca, and Davy levered up a second round and fired again… He lowered the barrel to the base of Tommy Basca’s skull…” This shows sacrifice in the way of protecting your family and giving up your freedom for your family. Technically Ruben should've died because Jeremiah's gun shot wounds weren't as deadly as Rubens. “Your father should not have died,Ruben. Did you know that? I nodded, but he said “ not just because its terrible to be without him tough god knows”…I examined him, you know . No organs were damaged. Blood vessels yes . But he actually shouldn't have died.” This part of the book also ties in with the motif of miracles because this was Jeremiah’s last big miracle and he sacrificed his life for his son because he felt he has lived long enough and his son deserves to live life more even if he has bad lungs. Throughout the book Peace Like A River, there are several mentions to landscape and setting. I believe that the landscape is a analogy for the main character, Jeremiah’s, health. Throughout the book there are obvious analogies such as the badlands and winter. But those can be talked about later. In the start of the book they are at August Shultz’s farm hunting geese. He describes the landscape as “soaked swaths with a december smelling wind” (Page7) from this we can say for certain that Jeremiah is in good health.This could also mean a fresh start. Now my third and final compare and contrast is that friends would also sacrifice for themselves also. In Harry Potter and in The Maze Runner Harry and Thomas’s friends both sacrificed for them, (Spoiler Alert) like in Harry Potter when Ron’s brother Fred, dies for Harry. Just like his parents, friends, teachers, uncles I could go on. Or in The Maze Runner when Alby dies for Thomas or Chuck.

There were many sacrificial elements that existed in The Bean Trees. Sacrifices that the characters in the novel made for the benefit of others or themselves. These sacrifices played a role almost as significant as some of the characters in the book. Some prime examples of these sacrifices are Mattie’s will to offer sanction to illegal immigrants, the fact that Taylor sacrificed the whole success of her excursion by taking along an unwanted, abused Native-American infant, and Estevan and Esperanza’s decision to leave behind their daughter for the lives of seventeen other teacher union members.

Reuben had much faith in his own father, while Jeremiah never wavered in his faith with God because he always trusted in Him.
