In the book Peace Like A River one of the main themes are sacrifice.The meaning of sacrifice is the act of giving up something that you want to keep especially in order to get or do something else or to help someone. There are many characters in this book who shows perfect examples of sacrifice such as Ruben,Jeremiah, Davy, Roxanna, Jape Waltzer, and Andreeson.

One of the examples in the book was when Davy sacrificed his freedom and being with his family by killing Tommy Basca and Israel Finch on page 51 “Then he lifted the bat, the knot-head, and Davy fired and Israel went backwards into Tommy Basca, and Davy levered up a second round and fired again… He lowered the barrel to the base of Tommy Basca’s skull…” This shows sacrifice in the way of protecting your family and giving up your freedom for your family. Technically Ruben should've died because Jeremiah's gun shot wounds weren't as deadly as Rubens. “Your father should not have died,Ruben. Did you know that? I nodded, but he said “ not just because its terrible to be without him tough god knows”…I examined him, you know . No organs were damaged. Blood vessels yes . But he actually shouldn't have died.” This part of the book also ties in with the motif of miracles because this was Jeremiah’s last big miracle and he sacrificed his life for his son because he felt he has lived long enough and his son deserves to live life more even if he has bad lungs. This possibly also wasn't even Jeremiah’s choice it could've been Gods because God has been working miracles through Jeremiah so maybe God choice this as Jeremiah’s last miracle and
