The different reasons and attitudes for marriage in the early 1800 come from the foundation of love, money, and class. Societal statuses reflect on the reputation of which a family holds. Comparing and contrasting these many aspects of reasons for marriage play an important role in Pride and Prejudice.
Mr. and Mrs. Bennet 's marriage in the novel Pride and Prejudice does not seem more opposite than the definition of love. The Bennett 's marriage does not contain love but only to tolerate one another. Mrs. Bennett has her prideful ways and wants for her daughters to marry rich, while Mr. Bennett want his daughters to marry out of love. In the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, her attitude towards Mrs. Bennett remain distant and does not take into consideration his needs. Wickham and Lydia run away becoming a social disgrace to the Bennet 's family name. Lydia thought that Mr. Wickham had every intention of marrying her when they ran away together. While finding out later on Mr. Wickham had no intentions of marrying Lydia to begin with. Because of the faux pas Lydia committed the only other option would be to get married. To Mr. Wickham his married life should only consist of class and money, no love will ever come out of his marriage with Lydia. This marriage shows that they do not have the capability to have a relationship such as Lydia 's parents or Jane 's. Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bennett try to cover up the immature reaction of running away with Mr. Wickham but not marrying him. They both offer Mr. Wickham money to marry Lydia to not give the Bennett family name a bad reputation. Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth 's marriage contrasts from Lydia and Mr. Wickham 's because of love, while Mr. Wickham cares more about the money and social class. Elizabeth and Lydia have one thing in common, both of them have love but their marriages could not seem more
