Jessica Krikunov The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is an allegorical play written during the McCarthy era in the United States that tells the story of the Salem Witch Trials. Although the entire book can be considered a symbol, within itself, one of the most important instances of imagery and symbolism in the book is Miller’s use of heat/fire and cold imagery to juxtapose between various characters and their motives. In Act 3, Abigail says, “I have a sense for heat, John and yours has drawn me to my window, and I have seen you looking up, burning in your loneliness”. In this quote, Abby is using heat to illustrate love and passion for John. The fire here might also relate to the rebellious nature of Proctor and how mischievous Abigail is. Heat
