“There’s something in our world that makes men lose their heads- they couldn’t be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s the white man always wins. They’re ugly, but these are the facts of life.” (Lee 295 ) Racism is a problem that is still going on around the world today. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Bob Ewell, a white man, falsely accuses Tom Robinson, an african-american man, of raping his daughter, Mayella Ewell. That is not the only way racism is shown in the book though, it’s also shown through the way people in Maycomb treat colored people and segregation. There are many examples of racism in the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. One of the Some evidence for that is that Tom Robinson was found guilty just because of his skin color. “I shut my eyes. Judge Taylor was polling the jury. “Guilty… guilty… guilty… guilty…” as stated by Lee in chapter 21, Tom Robinson was found guilty even though there was no evidence that he raped Mayella. The only reason why Tom Robinson would be found guilty is because of his race. The black community is treated the worse in Maycomb because they always do what they can to help the white people and the white people just mistreat them. Some of the ways white people mistreat or disrespect the black community is by using their church as a place to gamble, segregation and One example for this is when Francis, Scout’s cousin, keeps telling Scout that Atticus is ruining the family by defending a colored man.(Lee 9) Scout then feels betrayed because her family was acting harsh towards her because of her father. This shows how Francis believes that blacks and whites should be separated.A second example is when Calpurnia takes Scout and Jem to the black community church. When Jem and Scout get there they want to leave because they don’t feel welcomed due to being the only white people there.(Lee 158) This shows how colored people don’t feel the need to give the white people hospitality since they don’t get respect from the townspeople. Racism is a problem that has been happening for a long time now. To Kill a Mockingbird took place around the 1930’s and had racism, now we are in 2016 and racism is still tearing us down. This is proven in To Kill a Mockingbird through all the examples I used. I think it’s unfair that colored people get treated that way because after all they are human and they have the same things everyone else has except maybe their skin color is different. Racism isn’t the same as it was before but it still is an unnecessary
