Despite being from in two different time periods, Lord of the Flies by Golding and Othello by Shakespeare , Shakespeare and Golding both share a common theme of good versus evil; the characters Simon and Desdemona share the interest of purity and represent a God/Goddess while being challenged by the unholy or the evil. Jack, dark and evil character and Iago, dark and masterminded character share the characteristic of being evil or unholy. Unfortunately in both instances, evil takes over and cannot be a pure individual. The evil inside them takes over their heart but does not really control them, even in their most brutal murders, they still maintain to be themselves and not get absorbed by evil and turn insane. Simon, good hearted and unselfish and Desdemona, caring and loving, represent all the good that life has. They are the good part of the world. The characters are loving, passionate and forgiving individuals. Desdemona expresses this through her language and actions, displayed as innocent, unselfish, and her regard for others. This is evident when she asks for forgiveness on behalf of Cassio for Othello’s forgiveness, and comprehends a woman’s desire to cheat on a man. This is being demonstrated toward other people on the island, most importantly Piggy. The statement “They talked, cried out unintelligibly, and lugged him towards the trees. Then, amid the roar of bees in the afternoon sunlight, Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched bands” (LOFTF, 57), revealing that Simon has the Skills to take charge and lead but at the same time maintain his good in him.
