Edgar Allan Poe was a prominent and influential figure from the 18th century in literature. When Poe’s name is uttered, one imagines murder, the unknown spirits, a pitch black raven, and a woman’s tomb by the sounding sea. Poe’s two poems in particular, ´”Spirits of the Dead” and “The Sleeper,” relates to Poe’s theory and is used express his differential views about death. Although both “Spirits of the Dead” and “The Sleeper” display dark, yet dream-like aspects of death through figurative language, “Spirits of the Dead” illustrates a more optimistic idea that the dead still surrounds the living, while “The Sleeper” ends with a resignation that the living should move on from the dead because the dead will never return. In “The Spirits of the Dead,” Poe uses symbolism and personification from nature to speculate a sanguine version of death where the living and the dead still can make contact. Although a mortal “soul” may seem alone while walking through a graveyard alone, “The spirits of the dead who stood/ …In death around thee-and their will/ Shall overshadow thee: be still” (Lines 7-10). One is never truly alone with one’s thoughts because the spirits from the unknown world are constantly watching. In the second stanza, “The night, tho’ clear, shall frown- And the stars shall look not down/ From their high thrones in the heaven… But their red orbs without beam… Which would cling to thee forever” (Lines 11-18). In this stanza, “the stars,” who represent the spirits, are not responding to the living. This elucidates the barrier between life and death although the stars, which are looking down upon the living, and the night, who is frowning upon the living, are distant from the “soul,” regardless of their close proximity. Poe was some of the first American poets to become famous while he was alive and is still considered of the most talented writers in America and other European nations. He is admired by all and still continues to leave behind a very powerful legacy. His different perspectives of death, whether it is more ideal notion of death to a disparaging idea of death, becomes the foundation to other writers who appreciates his writing and his ideas.

Emily Dickinson is a poet who explores her curiosity of death and the afterlife through her creative writing ability. She displays different views on death by writing two contrasting poems: one of a softer side and another of a more ridged and scary side. When looking at dissimilar observations of death it can be seen how private and special it is; it is also understood that death is inevitable so coping with it can be taken in different ways. Emily Dickinson’s poems “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” and “I Heard A Fly Buzz When I Died” show both parallel and opposing views on death.
The writing style of Edgar Allan Poe shows the writer to be of a dark nature. In this story, he focuses on his fascination of being buried alive. He quotes, “To be buried alive is, beyond question, the most terrific of these [ghastly] extremes which has ever fallen to the lot of mere mortality.” page 58 paragraph 3. The dark nature is reflected in this quote, showing the supernatural side of Poe which is reflected in his writing and is also a characteristic of Romanticism. Poe uses much detail, as shown in this passage, “The face assumed the usual pinched and sunken outline. The lips were of the usual marble pallor. The eyes were lusterless. There was no warmth. Pulsation had ceased. For three days the body was preserved unburied, during which it had acquired a stony rigidity.” page 59 paragraph 2. The descriptive nature of this writing paints a vivid picture that intrigues the reader to use their imagination and visualize the scene presented in the text. This use of imagery ties with aspects of Romanticism because of the nature of the descriptions Poe uses. Describing the physical features of one who seems dead is a horrifying perspective as not many people thing about the aspects of death.

Death can both be a painful and serious topic, but in the hands of the right poet it can be so natural and eloquently put together. This is the case in The Sleeper by Edgar Allan Poe, as tackles the topic of death in an uncanny way. This poem is important, because it may be about the poet’s feelings towards his mother’s death, as well as a person who is coming to terms with a loved ones passing. In the poem, Poe presents a speaker who uses various literary devices such as couplet, end-stopped line, alliteration, image, consonance, and apostrophe to dramatize coming to terms with the death of a loved one.

This shift characterizes the constant adaptation in appearance that death acquires. Moreover, the idea of warmth radiating from death’s presence reemerges with the introduction to a “cottage of darkness” (line 10), which to some may bring about a feeling of pleasantry and comfort. Although they both represent death, they also represent it as something other than death. Death brings about a variety of different feelings, because no two people feel the same way or believe the same thing. The fact that our faith is unknown makes the notion of death a common topic, as writers can make sense of their own feelings and emotions and in the process hope to make readers make sense of theirs too. Throughout Edgar Allan Poe’s life, death was a frequent visitor to those he loved around him. When Poe was only 3 years old, his loving mother died of Tuberculosis. Because Poe’s father left when he was an infant, he was now an orphan and went to live with the Allan’s. His stepmother was very affectionate towards Edgar and was a very prominent figure in his life. However, years later she also died from Tuberculosis, leaving Poe lonely and forlorn. Also, later on, when Poe was 26, he married his cousin 13-year-old Virginia, whom he adored. But, his happiness did not last long, and Virginia also died of Tuberculosis, otherwise known as the Red Death, a few years later. After Virginia’s death, Poe turned to alcohol and became isolated and reckless. Due to Edgar Allan Poe’s loss of those he cared for throughout his life, Poe’s obsession with death is evident in his works of “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “The Black Cat”, and “The Fall of the House of Usher”, in which in all three death is used to produce guilt.
The Sleeper, by Edgar Allan Poe, was first published in the Poems of 1831; this poem has since been revised from its current version which was printed in 1845. This poem was written during the Romanticism Period. This time period is defined as a time in which poets began to “rebel against the Neoclassical restrictions and dominance of reason as poetic aim. Romantic poetry celebrated the imagination over rationality, passion, and dreams over reason and external reality, and isolated individuality over collective humankind. Romantic poetry looked to celebrate both the supernatural and elevate the commonplace.” (Henriksen) Poe’s imagination prevails in this lyric poem. The speaker of the poem experiences an internal conflict while mourning the death of a loved one.
These themes of untimely death, blood, and insanity are prevalent throughout his works. Even some of the works that are about love, involve some sort of twisted necromancy, such as in “Annabel Lee.” His focus on death was extreme, as he explored all aspects of it including the act itself, the burial (sometimes premature), and the subsequent mourning thereafter. Much of this likely had to do with the unfortunate and often tragic losses he dealt with throughout his life, and just as many of his characters often face the loss of their sanity, so does it seem to be the case with Poe.

Death is tragic and one of the most finite things on Earth. It can turn an average human being insane and change his/her life forever. Losing someone close and dear is incredibly painful and an experience one will not forget. Death can cause numerous emotions to bubble up, like sorrow, and grief. In “The Raven” Poe utilizes imagery, diction, and figurative language along with symbolism to illustrate how isolation can cause madness when one comes to terms with the finite consequences of death.
