Blinding Love in Almost, Maine
John Cariani’s play Almost, Maine takes place in a detached region of Maine. Almost, Maine is an exciting play centered around the daily lives of different love hungry adults who seek love in one form or another. Cariani conveys a message about how these young adults are blinded by the sheer nature of love. Almost, Maine does a marvelous job at showing with regards to having distinctive characters that exhibit such circumstance to the audience. Many might assume that this just your average romantic comedy play, however, Almost, Maine actually reflects our everyday lives, proves that how much of a fool we can be sometimes to do anything for love.

After the two characters become more acquainted with each other, the story abruptly alters its course by East kissing Glory unusually. East claims that he fell in love with Glory even they met a truly brief time prior. Glory explains East that she is in Almost to demonstrate her regard to her dead spouse by viewing the Northern Lights. When Jimmy sees Sandrine, he immediately assumes that Sandrine might give him a chance and get back with him. However, it turns out that Sandrine is only at that bar to celebrate her bachelorette party. The scene develops with Sandrine finding out the mark on Jimmy’s arm. He has a tattoo of “Villian”, which is an incorrect spelling of “Villain”. This shows how Jimmy truly feels sorry about letting Sandrine go away. It also demonstrates that Jimmy is blinded by love, because who in their right mind would get a tattoo of their former lover? Certainly not me and not anybody I am aware

There are many forces in the tragic play of Romeo and Juliet that are keeping the two young, passionate lovers apart, all emanating from one main reason. In this essay I will discuss these as well as how love, in the end, may have been the cause that led to the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Their strong attraction to each other, which some call fate, determines where their forbidden love will take them.

Critics of Tim O'Brien's Going After Cacciato have examined its narrative technique (see Raymond) and its position in literature as metafiction (see Herzog). Still other critics have commented on the motif of time (see McWilliams) and the theme and structure (see Vannatta). On the last point, critics find the structure of the novel is fragmented to reveal the nature of the United States' involvement in Vietnam. Unfortunately, this fragmentation makes the novel appear structurally weak. Critics have found no unifying element to the parts to affirm the sense of wholeness readers feel after completing O'Brien's novel. Nevertheless, the reader senses that the seemingly random construction of the novel serves to underscore the random nature of the Vietnam war. However, to lightly dismiss O'Brien's organization as simply fragmentary does great disservice to this American author. A critical examination of a traditional element found in American Literature since its inception--the symbolic use of Nature--unifies Going After Cacciato and places the work firmly in the Romantic tradition. Just as Romanticists have always relied upon Nature to unify and add substantial depth to their novels so, too, has O'Brien. Specifically, a different element of Nature appears in each of the sections of the novel. ... of my examination of love in A Midsummer Night's Dream, to arrive at the conclusion that none of its players exhibited any love at all, and Shakespeare's point was to prove that love is unreal; a fabrication of human imagination. I was excited to discover, however, that in the midst of the ugly scene he set up to emphasize this argument most strongly, he left a single bastion of true, honest, unadulterated (for Hermia is never charmed by the pansy's dew) love. To me, Hermia is an example of what humanity could be, and how it could love, were it to forget some of the smaller matters in which it so often becomes willingly entangled.

Out of the couple, Claudio, a brave soldier respected by some of the highest ranked men during his time, Prince Don Pedro and the Governor of Messina, Leonato, has the most growing to do. Throughout the play, Claudio’s transformation from an immature, love-struck boy who believes gossip and allows himself to easily be manipulated is seen when he blossoms into a mature young man who admits to his mistakes and actually has the capacity to love the girl he has longed for.

Henry James’s Washington Square and Steve Martin’s Shopgirl are worthy additions to this timeless tradition. The twist for these two novels is that both heroine’s, Catherine in Washington Square and Mirabelle in Shopgirl, fall for men that do not love them in return. At least the ladies’ love is not returned in the manner they expect. The novels were written more than a century apart. Thus the dialogue, settings, and characters are different, but the central theme of unrequited love is present in both novels.
