This book is mostly about a war that is occurring at the time and friends who apart from that are going through their own problems. There is several themes I found in this book. Alcohol use, fake friendships, false communication and etc. These themes relate to real life events that at least one of use go through. I searched up many current events that relate to the themes of this novel and I found many articles. I chose one specifically because I felt it was relatable to teens, which is basically who I associate with and hang around.

The article I chose has to do with alcohol it’s called “The aging of ‘Overage’ drinking”. It talks about the consequences of excessive drinking, medical problems and why people do it. Drinking can cause heart problems, changes in physical appearance and affects the way they act. This is around 1924 where at the moment there is a war passing by. Jake falls in love with Lady Brett Ashley but can’t keep a relationship with her because of the war. Brett is always having love affairs with other guys. Meanwhile he has moved to Pamplona and Spain and originally lived in Paris, France. He meets Cohn, Mike and Pedro whom they became close friends but Cohn ends up having an affair With Brett and they end up no longer being friends. Mike drinks all the times and gets drunk, basically doing nothing with his life. He is always drunk even for days and that claims to be a big accomplishment for him. But he’s not the only one that drinks, they all drink consistently and sometimes take it to another level. They drink almost every day like as if that’s their job.
