On The Metaphors of a Decadent Society in “The Fall of the House of Usher” A sense of decadence can be easily found in the the story of “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allen Poe, which appears especially strong on the main character Roderick Usher, who buries his own sister alive and collapses to destruction along with his family house. If we analyze the story closely, we might find that Roderick and his connections with other elements, for example, the house and his sister Madeline, can be interpreted as a metaphor of the process of demolition of a decadent society. In the story, Roderick tells the narrator that his illness may partially come from Madeline’s illness, which troubles the most famous doctors. Such conversation shows that the relation between Roderick and Madeline is more closer than intimacy, and consider the fact that Roderick needs her to reproduce and survive, the relation between he and Madeline can refer to the relation between the people in a decadent society and their hope and future. In a normal society, people strive to protect and expand their hope of the future. However, in a decadent one, people gradually lost it due to indulgence in the physical and spiritual pleasures while not reproduce much. The lose of the hope and future in turn hurt the people themselves and push them deeper into the pit of destruction. In the story, such complication is displayed thoroughly on Roderick and his sister. Roderick desired to preserve the decay of Madeline’s body when he madly convinces himself that she is already dead, and buried her alive, which accelerated her destruction. Later in the story, when Madeline came back from the grave and dies. Due to the connection between Roderick and Madeline, Roderick’s life is took away as well. Such relationship is a great metaphor to the people and their hope in a decadent society: when people give up their hope, their hope dies; when the hope dies, the people have no more
