In the novel, The Fault In Our Stars, the characters have to face numerous obstacles, each more heart-wrenching than the previous one. Through their crises, the characters often find themselves questioning their self worth and purpose in life. Throughout the story, the thematic message of personal identity is consistently portrayed through a series of literary devices such as characterization, imagery, symbolism and even theme. To begin with, the qualities and attributes of characters like Hazel and Augustus reveals quite a bit to the reader about the message. For instance, a main concern for Augustus was being lost in the oblivion, being forgotten. He doesn't want to be yet another dead cancer patient. Hazel herself states, “ I understand the story ended because Anna died or got too sick to write and this mid sentence thing was supposed to reflect how life really ends...”(Green 50). Not only, does it symbolize how life ends, but particularly how Hazel's life might end. The reason she is always looking for answers about who Anna really is and how her life ends, is in hopes of finding the answers about her own life and about who she is besides her illness. This once again reflects the main moral of the story. Furthermore, imagery also plays a vital role in the development of the thematic message. John Green uses vivid adjectives and descriptive verbs to paint an accurate picture of Caroline Mathers. “...struggling with anger and frustration over not being able to speak”(Green). With this description the reader is introduced to a character who is literally losing her mind, completely unaware of what she he become. She does not know who is anymore nor her purpose for living, from the once fun-loving girl she had become a monster because of cancer.
