Their Eyes Were Watching God recounts the life of Janie Woods; going through her childhood, all the way up until she is in her late forties. Along the way she realizes that she sees things differently from other people and she meets people who end up developing her morally. Making Hurston’s novel a bildungsroman that teaches of happiness and how no one should have to settle for something if what they really want is out there. The things that truly end up changing the way that our protagonist, Janie, thinks are her relationships with each one of her three husbands. The first husband, Logan Killicks, never does anything wrong to Janie. He treats her fairly, never lays a hand on her, and has lots of land. However, Janie doesn’t love him at all.
