The Writing Process Analysis

The writing process is no simple task. From brainstorming, creating an outline, to implementing ideas into a coherent paper requires a strong understanding of the task at hand. Looking back at the classes leading up to first year writing this semester, I can seee were my prior knowledge has proven to be helpful. In Ap language and composition in high school, the writing process began to be something of enjoyment. The most important information was how to identify aspects of a paper that would answer the general question of analysis, “What is the author trying to convey to the reader?” Responding to this question is it important to look at the aspects of writing which including: tone, diction, style, syntax, and word choice. Moulder, I know I can go forward feeling comfortable in rhetorical writing situations. From the first essay in the class on writing about immigration and belonging, I found her perspective to be informative and eye opening in connecting my own experiences to the past. I completely skipped the affects of immigration on Native Americans as I state, “ When Caleb purchased 6,000 acres of land in this acquisition of land from the Native American people, this solidified his placed both in Rhode Island socially and financially” (PAGE IMMIGRATION para 1). While the line gives significant data about the acquisition of land, I cut out the whole other side of the story, which is the killing and taking of the land by my ancestors. These details are huge as it highlights the fact that my success is founded on death and the idea of white supremacy— both of which are terrible. After the addition of that information my essay sounded more comprehensive on the history of America compared to the white-based interpretation that I touched on in my first draft. In office hours, I found that simply consulting ideas with Dr. Moulder was beneficial in my writing process. The idea of looking at emotions, credibility, evidence type, and genre type was powerful in my writing process. Credibility is valuable in writing, as it establishes the evidence type and emotions of the reader on the topic, and reading others writing in the class I found this to be especially true. An example of this can be seen in the digital essay presentation. When a group would present data that seemed promising, I would immediately look at the source as it holds more value than the data presented, and without a citation the evidence is basically void. Following with the evidence type, the genre that one chooses to write in can effect the emotions and evidence selected. Looking at the Mendelson law review from the course packet, I found that the genre type presented her data well and allowed for a smooth blending of court briefs and personal knowledge in a well drafted review of immigration in the US. For example, looking at my group presentation with Kelly and Reijer (PAGE), I recall doing research and even visiting her LinkedIn site to get as much background on her occupation, education, and publications. From this research I was able to find even her current occupation as we stated, “She practiced law in Southern Arizona” (PAGE MENDELSON HANDOUT).
