The Power of Perception

There are certain standards that man has created to classify how one may think or believe. In different cultures, some believe unalike than others. There are many questions that can be discussed and analyzed, specific to a worldview. For example, a question that could be used to analyze a worldview would be Metaphysics. Metaphysics asks, “what is”, Epistemology asks, “how do we know”, and Axiology asks, “what the nature of value is.” All of these are very important to study and used to acquire more understanding. The basis for worldview is human perception. Worldview has to do with how one may think and subject to change with time. The worldview of modernism directly contradicts many beliefs of Theism. This leads
C.S. Lewis directly assess how a metaphorical view of modernism has hindered the Christian view by stating, “Almost our whole education has been directed to silencing this shy, persistent, inner voice; almost all our modern philosophies have been devised to convince us that the good of man is to be found on this earth”(Lewis 620). This conflicts with Christian theism because Christians believe that God is the ultimate reality. Theism and modernism conflict with metaphysical questions and also with epistemological questions. Theism believes that God is the giver of all wisdom and knowledge, while modernism comes from a more selfish point of view that knowledge is gained by oneself, through reason and logic. Axiology has a deep way of separating theism and modernism, because it shows what the true values of the time are. C.S. Lewis speaks about the values and the misguidance of modernism by writing, “One cause of misery and vice is always present with us in the greed and pride of men, but at certain periods in history this greatly increased by the temporary prevalence of some false philosophy”(Lewis 163).     Throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth Centuries, the Modernist movement arose as a result of protest against and rejection of traditional art forms. Modernism grew increasingly popular, and was evident through architecture, the visual arts, literature, social and political structure, behavior and faith. There were a variety of movements within the Modernist period, including Futurism, Constructivism, Dadaism, Surrealism and the Bauhaus. The Dada movement grew from political backlash of World War I, and essentially rejected all prior established reason and logic, ultimately recreating art in a never-before-seen irrational way.
