The World Without Us by Alan Weisman was an interesting book following the story of what would happen if humans were to suddenly disappear and how the Earth and nature would rebound from the effects that humans have caused or created. It also explains what nature would not be able to accomplish, such as biodegrading plastic and stopping explosions or meltdowns caused by nuclear power plants. The book also illustrates the lasting effects of these subjects. The book stresses what exactly would happen after humans disappear and how long it would take for nature to return to the buildings in the cities. My favorite part of the book was when it stated the things that would happen to nuclear power plants or to the nuclear weapons we would leave behind if we were to suddenly disappear. I found it interesting how long it would take for uranium to decay and the effects it would have on nature. The nuclear power plants, if left behind, would eventually overheat without human supervision, which would cause it to go into a meltdown or to burn. This would result in increased levels of radioactivity in the air and in nearby bodies of water, which would last a long period of time because of the long half …show more content…

The book opens with everyone age 15 and over disappearing, which leads to many difficulties such as cars wrecking, pets starving, and somehow a barrier forming around the remaining children. Furthermore, the children quickly realize that they will end up starving if they don't start farming crops and animals because of the barrier not allowing them to receive food from outside sources, which, to their knowledge, may or may not exist. Another reason I chose this book is how interesting it seemed to me about how nature would continue living on without humans and how it would recuperate from man-made
