The Women role in The Epic of Gilgamesh In past decades there was a huge gap between men and women. Women were considered as a limited role such as; under sexual habits. After many years, obviously, many things have changed. Society respects women, give her rights and more independent. Recently, she has an significant role in many ways such as; in positive and negative ways. Every women can make and change the whole society because she can do what she wants to with no difficulties and inequalities. To be more specific, in our text “ The Epic of Gilgamesh” plays an important role of gender roles and shows how they are so different from each other. In Gilgamesh’s story it shows that the men take their advantages from the women. For Example, Shamhat; A cultic prostitute from Urk, whose task was to Entic Enkidu into the ways of man. Gilgamesh and Enkidu when they fight with each other, Gilgamesh used her and sent her to drawn him, and she changed Enkidu to civilize being. “ This is he, shamhat cradle your bosom, bare your sex, let him take in your charms! Do not recoil, but take in his scent: he will see you, and approach you” ( Goerge,Tablet I 180). She used her cleverness and power to take what she wants and transformed him. After, when he became clay and he lose his power. She gave him her dress and cloth. However, shamht is always behind him. After Gligamesh and Enkidu they became friends “Gligamesh and Enkidu” Enkidu died and gilgamesh blamed her because she made him to try a new experiences, live a life that he was not used to it, became a human, and used her power that came from the sexiualty for six days and seven nights. She believed in him and support him. She is well-developed her son’s personality and what he is thinking of. Also, improved and encouraged him. Even though sometimes he did not listen to her advices but she always beside him and follow and protect him. Besides, she emphasized to shamash to protect Gilgamesh and save his life. Shamash “ the gold of sun”. To illustrate, “[ The mother of Gilgamesh] was clever and wise, well versed in everything, she said to her son..] (George, tables I , I260). When Gilgamesh told his mother about the two nightmares that he saw them, the first one is a meteor lands in a field outside Uruk. The second one is when Gilgamesh finds an axe lying in the street. She said that he might be a new man and they will fight in the beginning but they will be a great friends and companion. She gave him a power to face his problems and troubles. Ninsun stopped the fight between her son and Enkidu because she thought they will be a loyal friends.
In conclusion, Female took a significant part in Gilgamesh period. They were a reason to continue and create the events. Obviously, each one has an essential role that changes something in the story. In the “ the Epic of Gilgamesh” they stated that power of male, but each powerful male is behind him a stronger women. Women has an wisdom and a meaningful mind so it could change an whole community.
